A few years ago at a Bible study someone said that when we pray we should pray specifically and it was related to some friends looking for a place to live. The person said that when they pray about where to live, they should ask specifically for what they want... like praying for 2 bedroom apartment with a washer and dryer in the apartment and they should pray expectantly. The other day I did morning devotions with a close family, and the mom told the kids that they shouldn't tell God what to give them because it puts limitations on Him. I have been thinking about this all week, because the two oldest kids were specifically praying for all the money for their upcoming mission trip to come in this week. From what the mom said it would seem that praying specifically for what we want/need is putting a limit on what God can do, even though He can do whatever He wants in the blink of an eye. This seems to be a contradiction in my mind, but maybe I am missing something.

Thoughts anyone?

Read 1 Chronicles 4: 9,10. Jabez made a specific request and God granted it. Further, Isaiah 65: 24 tells us that God already knows our needs even before we speak them. Therefore making a specific request is a demonstration of faith and should not be construed to mean that we are directing God on how to do his work and therefore limiting him when our requests fall short of his plans for us. Remember what God himself tells us "I know the plans I have for you" Jeremiah 29: 11. This means that we shouldn't obsess ourselves with whether what we are asking for is too little or too much! All we should be concerned about is whether our request is in consonance with his will. See 1John 5: 14,15 -'This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask for anything ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him'

You may ask, how do we know what God's will is? The answer is in Ephesians 5: 17 'Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what God's will is'

This requires that we should constantly endeavour to discern God's will by seeking him. 'Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness' Mathew 7: 33. Draw close to God and he will draw close to you James 4: 8.

Lastly, God is able to see the motive behind our requests. (What you say out loud in your prayer: "God please give me a bigger car." What you don't say, but is at the depth of your heart: "so that i can be parking it next to my nasty boss's small car." Does this sound familiar?) The bible tells us at James 4: 2,3 'You do not have, because you do not ask. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures' I hope this helps to clear your confusion Katie.

Thank you cattle. I have observed on other posts that you are a peacemaker. You are a gem. 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.' Matthew 5: 9
