In Acts 2:4 What is the subject matter?

I realize this is a controversial subject and I think we can use this topic to make a good point!

Yes he did when I was born again, you see I was brought up catholic and then when I was saved I became a believer and The holy spirit became my believer. Can you imagine a non spirit filled believer telling a spirit filled believer the bible is not true.

2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

There are three other occasions where the book of acts teaches receiving the holy spirit separate from the new birth.

You can believe what you want, PJ. It does not affect me one way or the other.

Blessings,

Leon

Phillip,

The terminology about "receiving the Holy Spirit" in the context you are speaking is about receiving "the GIFTS" imparted by the Holy Spirit , not the Holy Spirit Himself and you will notice like I have demonstrated before in another post that with only two exceptions that are easy to discern the reasons for those exceptions, is that no one ever received the "Gifts" unless one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ personally laid hands upon them. In fact even in the other two instances the Apostles were still present.

Blessings!

Walter

In the scripture when the bible says they received the Holy Spirit, it means they received the Holy Spirit, not one time does the bible say gifts of the spirit.

Praying in tongues, is not the gift of tongues, two different topics

You said no one received the Holy spirit, unless the apostles laid hands on them

The bible list two occassions where believers received the Holy Spirit, and no one laid hands on them, in one instance they heard the word about the holy spirit and received.

Another instance in the bible where a believer received the holy spirit without the apostles praying for that person was: Acts9:13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my names sake.

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

18

The man that wrote the majority of the new testament was prayed for by a man, a believer, not an apostle

So what does praying in tongues do again? There are other gifts besides tongues, right? So if I don't speak or pray in tongues then I'm not saved? Maybe I have the gift of discernment, and I discern that you're off base?:goofball:

Your statement would save, you are knowledgeable of the word, but other than that I guess it is up to you, Scripture is clear on prayiing in tongues and the gift of tongues they are two different.

Scripture shows when one has received the holy spirit they will speak in tongues or pray in tongues which is not the gift of tongues. I have never implied that praying in tongues is necessary for salvation, but it is by the words of Jesus better than him being in with us in person.

I can post what the word says the benefit of praying in tongues is to the believer but it is far to precious to me to hear the disagreement. The Holy Spirit is available for any that want him.
