Sister,

I'm not denying the need to read and study the Scriptures. Even the one post you posted said that it doesn't mean "study."

If we take verses and passages out of context to prove a point, we have no leg to stand on in dealing with those who teach falsely who do the same thing.

The contents of this topic is very clear .

It's not out of context!

So we can disagree!

I study the scripture enough to now what's True.

I have no problem refuting false doctrine on here!!

Many Christians back off and run!

Ohio, I’m curious why you posted on 2 Timothy 2:15 on this thread. Moonlight didn’t quote the passage here.

Ohio, you’re doing well to correct old English word usage, I agree.

But your argument as follows is not convincing, you said, “This verse is written specifically to Timothy. It also has nothing to do with reading or studying”. The rest of your post does little to establish that claim.

Clearly, Paul encourages Timothy to “cut straight”, the word of God.

If you want to say the verse has nothing to do with “study” (in the old English sense) that’s fine but the implication of a kind of study is inherent and can’t be denied.

See assembling.alanknox.net

Here is one response from him to a comment. I think it is very appropriate.

"I think you’re looking at this the wrong way. You’re asking, “Is it wrong to study the Bible?” That has nothing to do with the question that I’m asking. I’m asking, “What did Paul mean when he wrote 2 Timothy 2:15? Did he intend to communicate the importance of studying the Bible to Timothy?”

For example, if my evidence is correct, then “spoudazo” could not mean “study,” which means that was not Paul’s intention in this verse.

Regardless of the answer to my question, it is still good to study the Bible. However, if that was not Paul’s intention in 2 Timothy 2:15, then we need to try to understand what Paul meant. Otherwise, we are missing Paul’s intention and (in my understanding of Scripture) God’s intention."

I read Alan’s blog.

Although I agree the modern translations do select more up to date language suited for the modern reader, nevertheless, I believe the passage and its context, at the very least, does imply study.

I say this because Timothy is encouraged to “cut straight” the meaning of scripture. Timothy cannot do that without some kind of study?

I’m not saying you deny study but you seem to be saying the 2 Timothy 2:15 passage has nothing to with study, ie devotion of time to learn.

That fact motivates me ask if your interpretation is based on a dispensational preference?

On last question, do you believe “rightly dividing” the word means the same as “dividing” the Bible into dispensations?
