Cutting down the dissonance: the psychology of gullibility

Christina Valhouli

T wo years ago, 14-year-old Nathan Zohner, a student at Eagle Rock Junior High in Idaho Falls, announced on the Internet that he had circulated a petition demanding strict control of a chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide. This substance, he wrote, caused excessive sweating and vomiting, can be lethal if accidentally inhaled, contributes to erosion, and has been found in tumors of cancer patients. The student asked 50 people whether they supported the ban. Forty-three said yes, six were undecided, and only one knew that dihydrogen monoxide was... water.

While embracing a ban on H2O seems more foolish than dangerous, this anecdote shows how quickly people embrace some kinds of ideas without subjecting them to critical scrutiny. The human propensity to accept ideas at face value--no matter how illogical--is the fertile soil in which pseudoscience grows.

Not just KJV-only people. Any person that thinks you should be limited to any number of different Bible versions.

Exactly right. But there isn’t a literal cult following for any of the other versions comparable to the KJV-Only cult.

For example, there’s no such thing as NIV Onlyism, NLT Onlyism or ESV Onlyism.

I’m not using the word “cult” simply in jest, KJV Onlyism actually meets the qualifications of a real cult following.

For example, some of the more radical KJV Onlists claim (among other absurdities) that, “anyone who reads any other version of the Bible is a follower of Satan” or “all Bible versions except the KJV are fake and demonic.

I should probably make the distinction between people who prefer the KJV only as opposed to KJV Onlyist radicals.

On the other hand, some Bible versions garner more legitimate criticism because of their varying application of the dynamic approach to translation while very few seek formal equivalence to a fault. I like both approaches. I have about every version available. Lots of good ones to chose from

I should add—the more formal versions stay closest to the wording of the original inspired texts and it’s wording.

The more dynamic versions take more liberties often favoring one possible interpretation against a natural ambiguity inherent in the original.

Formal equivalence maintains the ambiguity while a more dynamic equivalence might select only one of two possible renderings for the sake of “clarity”. At least some take note in the margins

That’s not necessarily bad but readers should be aware of differences and be aware of ambiguities and be aware of the possibility of alternative renderings
