Short circuited is somewhat my understanding of the phrase "of no effect." See Luke 13:7 where the fig tree "cumbers" the ground. The tree looks normal. But it is time to bear fruit. So it makes the nutrition it receives from the soil of no effect.
Back to Galatians 5:4, because some are seeking to be justified by law, they are becoming of no effect or they are making Christ of no effect.
