Are we to keep the Ten Commandments today? It is also called the Royal Law, the Law of Liberty, Law of Christ in the NT.
If we are called to be holy like Christ and the ten commandments reveal his character, then shouldn't we apply them? Especially the first one that starts out , Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
Exodus 20 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
So by nature as some say, through love, keep his commandments , then how are we showing our love for him by letting him do the love for us when he died on the cross keeping all ten for us. ? Was that the law nailed to the cross or the ordinances? Love is an action verb and Jesus says we are to lay down our lives for each other . Does the ten commandments which are love commandments valid today? Jesus says a new commandment I give to you, that you love each other like I have loved you. 1 John 3:16 (perfect parallel to the famous other verse of John 3:16) Hereby we perceive the love of God , because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
John 3:16 King James Version (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 13:34-35 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Adam and Eve kept the Sabbath, Abraham, the Israelites, Peter, Paul, and it was kept in 70 A.D when the temple was destroyed and some say beyond until it got changed to sunday to avoid persecution for Judaism.
Richard Parrot7744! What are you trying to teach now, abominations are good??? Look what Paul is saying in another translation below.
1 Corinthians 10:25 (KJV) 25. "Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:"
Now look at the context of what is ACTUALLY taking place, what Paul is saying. WHY do you stop reading, READ verses 27 thru 29 to get the context, not just quote one verse and put a spin on it to your own liking!
1 Corinthians 10:27-29 (KJV)
27. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
28. But if any man say unto you, this is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
29. Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
Is it obvious that Paul is writing about food that is being sold in the market place as food in "shambles" meaning that this food was once offered as a "sacrifice to idols" (vs 28) and so what is taking place here? Paul is saying if any man has a conscience about eating food that was once offered to idols, resold in the market, bought and that brother in Christ should not eat that food in front of
him for the sake of the conscience person that thinks its wrong to do so. Another words there is NOTHING wrong with eating that BIBLICALLY CLEAN resold market food that was once offered to idols (idols dont eat, lol) but don't do so in front of a brother in Christ (another man's conscience, vs 29) that thinks its an abomination (in his mind) because it was once offered to idols. You see?
Why do you keep twisting Scripture to make your own doctrine? We have caught you many times, corrected you before, like here now and you continue to do so to your own destruction.
"Lobster Tail, Shrimp and Ham are now yum yum yummy and are so good for your tummy!!" end quote.
So tell us Richard, do you eat skunk, racoon, possum, squirrel, rat, mice and ANYTHING also??? How about dog and cat like many countries do? When they serve that dog and cat to you to eat, you say "whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake"(1 Corth 10:27) at the table of food they prepared for you, you would do so?
Your reasoning skills, your own thoughts, are frightening and you are an abomination to Yahweh come judgment day. He does have dietary LAWS you know.
The end time Prophet - Isaiah 65:2 "I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;" (like you Richard) Verse 4 "which eat swine's flesh, and the broth of abominable things in their vessels."
**JESUS DECLARED THAT **ALL FOODS ARE NOW CLEAN** IN THE NEW COVENANT!!
Colossians 2:16,17: Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you **EAT** or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a **SABBATH DAY**. These are a *SHADOW* of the things that were to come, the reality, however, is found in Christ!!!
Mark 7:18-23: Jesus says, "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body!" By saying this Jesus declared **ALL FOODS CLEAN**!! He went on "What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean. For from within , out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man unclean!"
Acts 10:9-16: Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by the four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a Voice told him, "Get up, Peter, kill and **EAT**!" "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." The Voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that **GOD HAS MADE CLEAN**!"{As per Mark 7:19 above) This happened **THREE TIMES**!, and the sheet was taken back to heaven!
I Timothy 4:1-5: The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through **HYPOCRITICAL LIARS**, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them **TO ABSTAIN FROM CERTAIN FOODS**, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything God created is good, and **NOTHING IS TO BE REJECTED** if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer!!
I Corinthians 10:25: Eat **ANYTHING** sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it!"
Lobster Tail, Shrimp and Ham are now yum yum yummy and are so good for your tummy!!
Actually TNT you have apparently forgotten that the forbidding to eat certain animals birds and fish was strictly in the OT Covenant for Jews. According to Noah's Covenant and Adam's Covenant God allowed people to eat everything with the breath of life in it!!!!!
God's First Covenant with Adam:
Genesis 1:29,30: Then God said, "give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it They will be yours for food. And to **ALL THE BEASTS OF THE EARTH** and **ALL** the birds of the air and **ALL** the creatures that move on the ground--**EVERYTHING** that has the breath of life in it..for food!"
God's Second Covenant with Noah:
Genesis 9:1-3: Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea, they are given to your hands. **EVERYTHING** that lives and moves will be **FOOD FOR YOU**!!
Galatians 3:23-25: "Before faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, *WE* ARE NO LONGER UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE LAW!!" {Hark disagrees with these inspired words of God!! since he believe we are still under the supervision of OT Law!}
I Corinthians 9:20,21: Paul said, "To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law though **I MYSELF AM NOT UNDER THE LAW**, so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law though I am not free from God's law but **AM UNDER CHRIST'S LAW!!"
"JESUS DECLARED THAT **ALL FOODS ARE NOW CLEAN** IN THE NEW COVENANT!!"
Many believe that in His encounter with the Pharisees recorded in Mark 7:1-23, Jesus abrogated the laws of clean and unclean meats revealed in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. In fact, many modern translations of the New Testament insert additional words into the text of Mark 7:19 to reflect this understanding. For example, the New International Version ends the verse with: â(In saying this, Jesus declared all foods âcleanâ).â
The New King James Version has âthus purifying all foodsâ and includes the marginal explanation: âNU [an abbreviation for the text used by many New Testament translations] sets off the final phrase as Markâs comment, that Jesus has declared all foods clean.â
But is this textual variation correct? Does it capture the meaning of the passage in question? What exactly did Jesus mean by His statement?
One of the foundational principles for understanding a scriptural passage is to examine the context. What is the topic of discussion here?
We should first notice that the subject is food in general, not which meats are clean or unclean . The Greek word broma, used in Mark 7:19, simply means food. An entirely different Greek word, kreas, is used in the New Testament where meatâanimal fleshâis specifically intended (see Romans 14:21; 1 Corinthians 13:8). So this passage concerns the general subject of food rather than meat. But a closer look shows that more is involved.
The first two verses help us understand the context: âThen the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem. Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found faultâ (Mark 7:1-2). They asked Jesus, âWhy do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?â (Mark 7:5).
Now we see the subject further clarified. It concerns eating âwith unwashed hands.â Why was this of concern to the scribes and Pharisees?
The covenant God made with Israel at Mount Sinai was based on many laws and other instructions that ensured ritual purity. Jewish observance, however, often went beyond these in embracing the âoral lawâ or âtradition of the eldersââpassed on by word of mouth and consisting of many additional man-made requirements and prohibitions tacked onto Godâs laws. Mark 7:3-4 provide a brief explanation of the specific practice the Pharisees and scribes were referring to in this account: âFor the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders âŚâ
Notice that food laws are not in question here. The topic is ritual purity based on the religious traditions of the oral law. The disciples were being criticized for not following the proper procedure of ceremonial hand-washing prescribed by these revered religious traditions.
The Jewish New Testament Commentary, explaining the background of Mark 7:2-4, offers a description of this custom: âMarkâs explanation of a ⌠ritual handwashing, in these verses corresponds to the details set forth in Mishna tractate Yadayim [the Mishna is a later written version of the oral tradition]. In the marketplace one may touch ceremonially impure things; the impurity is removed by rinsing up to the wrist. Orthodox Jews today observe [ritual hand-washing] before meals. The rationale for it has nothing to do with hygiene but is based on the idea that âa manâs home is his Temple,â with the dining table his altar, the food his sacrifice and himself the cohen (priest). Since the Tanakh [Old Testament] requires cohanim [priests] to be ceremonially pure before offering sacrifices on the altar, the Oral Torah requires the same before eating a mealâ (David Stern, 1995).
By the time of Christ many had made these additional practices a top priority and in so doing sometimes overlooked and even violated the fundamental principles of the law of God (Matthew 23:1-4, Matthew 23:23-28).
After decrying the hypocrisy of this and other religious traditions and practices of the day, Jesus gets to the heart of the matter. He explains that what defiles a person (in the eyes of God) comes not from the outside âby what one puts into his mouthâbut from within (Mark 7:15).
He said it is far more important to concentrate on what comes out of your heart than what you put into your mouth. Jesus explains: âFor from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a manâ (Mark 7:21-23).
Some of these same qualities are listed in Galatians 5:19-21 as âworks of the flesh.â They are contrasted with the âfruit of the Spiritâ (Galatians 5:22-23). âLove, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness [and] self-controlâ are qualities of a spiritually purified heart.
The ceremonial washings and purification practices of the Old Covenant were physical representations of the spiritual purification to be offered in the New Covenant (Hebrews 9:11-14). Hebrews 9:23 tells us: âTherefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens [referring to the tabernacle, altar, priests, etc.] should be purified with these [ceremonial purifications], but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.â So the apostle Paul writes that Jesus âgave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good worksâ (Titus 2:14).
âBlessed are the pure in heartâ is one of the fundamental teachings of Christ (Matthew 5:8).
The moral of this story is that food laws and righteousness are not mutually exclusive. God gave His food laws for sound reasons. True righteousness entails submission and obedience to all of Godâs Word (Psalms 119:172; Matthew 4:4; Matthew 5:17-19).
