The Tragedy of False Religion is the Tragedy of False Righteousness

All false religions, which includes certain aberrant forms of “Christianity”, assume an inherent “goodness” or “righteousness” residing deep within the soul of mankind that can save from the wrath of God’s coming judgment against sinners.

Matthew 7:21-25: Jesus says, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the Will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day. 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from Me you evildoers!' Therefore, Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the Rock!"
John 14:21,23-24: Jesus says, Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me... Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching, My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make our home with them! Anyone who does not love Me will not obey My teaching. These words you hear are not My own; they belong to the Father who sent Me!"
I John 2:1-5: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His Commands. Whoever says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone **OBEYS HIS WORD**, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him!!
John 12:48: Jesus says, "There is a Judge for the one who does not accept My words, the very words I have spoken will condemn them on the Last Day!!"
John 15:9: Jesus says, As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you. **IF YOU KEEP MY COMMANDS**, you will remain in My love!!"
John 16:12-14: Jesus says, "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide into the truth. He will not speak on his own, he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify Me because it is from Me that he will receive what he will make known to you!" {**THE ENTIRE NEW COVENANT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT**}
2 Timothy 3:15,16: 4:1,2: You have known the **HOLY SCRIPTURES**, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. **ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD-BREATHED** and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom, I give you this charge: **PREACH THE WORD**!! {**WHICH IS THE ENTIRE NEW COVENANT AND NEW TESTAMENT**!!}
THE GREAT COMMISSION: Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on ***EARTH*** has been given to Me {Not some RC Pope}. Therefore go and make disciples of *ALL NATIONS*...teaching them to **OBEY EVERYTHING** I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very *END OF THE AGE*!”

But I agree, regardless whatever they call themselves, “believers” or “Christians”, simply “believing in Jesus” like those in the passages I cited from the books of John and James, is not sufficient for salvation.

Dave, there is s vast difference between believing and faith.
A person might say,I believe in Jesus;then ask who is He,and what is He like.
Most people cannot answer those 2 questions.
A person looks at a chair and says i believe the chair will support my weight, then proceeds to pick up the chair throw it onto the ground, step on it, but never attempts to sit upon the chair.
A believer says, i believe this chair will support my weight, then sits on the chair.

There are about 400 New Testament commands to be obeyed with Faith and Love with the Hope of countless, heavenly, eternal rewards for Faithful and Loving service!!
Ephesians 6:8: Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will **REWARD** everyone for what ever good he does!

George
I just want to include one or two other sections of verses like Acts 16:31-32 for extra clarity. Here an unsaved jailer asks: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31They (Paul and Silas) replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved...”
Someone might think Acts and John contradict each other with regard to the act of believing but they do not. (I say that because there are always those knee jerk sophists, especially among atheist contradiction hunters, who speak loudly about contradictions but hardly think what a real contradiction really is.
But anyway, belief, like most words, has a diverse range of meaning. So in the context of the jailer who obviously did not believe like the demons mentioned in James believe or like the false Jews in John 8 believed. He believed like Abraham believed.
Grorge, I realize you already know all this so I’m not necessarily directing each individual comment here to you but to readers unacquainted with the word.
The following verses about Abraham might help define the kind of belief and faith practiced by Abraham.
“If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you ***would do the works of Abraham.*** 40But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing. 41You are doing the works of your father.” John 8:39-41
False (dead) faith vs true faith or false belief vs false belief from James 2
14What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
18But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 23and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,” and he was called the friend of God. 24You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
I realize I just now opened another can of worms by quoting a portion of scripture about the importance of works and faith.
So I ask readers to refrain from acting like contradiction-hunters and think about ranges of meaning, word usage and context.
Obviously, James is not about to introduce “works salvation”. Verese 18 clearly says good works are the expression of true faith.
Ephesians 2 is even more clear that we are saved for good works not by them:
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Following the discussion above the problem isn't so much a difference of doctrines but a difference of cultures. Greek culture embraces abstract thought therefore embraces an abstract faith apart from doing. Hebrew culture does not consider thought and action as different things. Therefore to have faith is the same as to do.
