A question that comes up every Shabbos is the thing about not leaving one's place of residence:

29. See that the Lord has given you the Sabbath. Therefore, on the sixth day, He gives you bread for two days. Let each man remain in his place; let no man leave his place on the seventh day - Exodus 16

To which my question is this: I live in an apartment. The building is completely circular. On the interior of the circle is all the recreational stuff like sandpit volleyball, the clubhouse, clay tennis courts, walking paths, and the pool. Is going out to the pool for a swim 'leaving my place of residence?' In other words, does the command mean we should stay indoors, or just 'where ever we live - however those borders are defined?'

Thanks Jeff, I found it and read it last night.

But isn't this speaking about those who were leaving their homes to find food? God wanted the people to rest and take no thought for what they should eat for tomorrow, therefore, He told Moses to tell the people not to leave their homes, and this would establish their faith and trust in Him, because they were out trying to gather food afraid they would not have enough to eat, and fearful what God had given them would not last, and they would die from hunger on what He had already given to them...Therefore, God said all of you stay in your houses on the Sababth and stop going out trying to gather food when I have already supplied your needs... trust and have faith in God that He will provide your every need... when I read the whole chapter this is the message I get from reading this...not a command that the Jews have misread for all these generations and centuries as a command law from God.

I really don't think this was a command for the Jews to continue all the days of their lives on the Sabbath day, otherwise this practice would have continued even in the days of Jesus on the Sabbath, but it did not... even the Pharisees didn't stay home on the Sabbath, but they did rest and spent time worshipping God in the synagogues. You can find this throughout the gospels and the book of Acts.
