Jeremiah 31 "A time is coming declares YHWH, when I will make a new covenant .....it will not be like the first covenant I made ....This is the covenant I will make .... I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts."

2Corinthians 3 ~ "He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant --- not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."

The Old Covenant was written down, anyone could read it, so why is it written in our hearts and minds?

If the New Covenant is Not like the Old Covenant then why write the same old laws over again on our hearts and minds?

If the Old Covenant kills then why does God write it on our hearts and minds when we enter into the New Covenant?

An Observation about Israel in Ephesians 2:11-21 & 3:5, 6

by John. Hendryx

The following passage really makes up the heart of Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians. Here he reveals a great mystery which was hidden in previous ages:

"Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called "the uncircumcision" by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ ... So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord."

Notice in this passage that Paul speaks to Gentiles as having been previously separate and alienated from Israel and the covenants of promise, but in Christ, Gentiles have also become citizens of Israel. The phrase "brought near" was their modern day parlance for Jewish proselytes. According to this passage we Gentiles now partake of the same promises and are no longer strangers to the commonwealth of Israel, but citizens of it. Notice the clear reference to Jesus Christ as the true Israel, and this includes are all who are joined to His body. Lets have a closer look: Verse 12 "alienated from the commonwealth of Israel" Paul now joins Gentiles to (vr. 19) "you are no longer strangers and aliens". No longer aliens to what? No longer aliens to the commonwealth of Israel. That means that Gentiles who are in Christ are now "citizens" (v. 19) of Israel built as a house with Christ as the chief cornerstone. In other words, Jesus Christ is the True Israel of God (its fulfillment and foundation) as are all who are joined in union to Him. To say it another way, both OT and NT saints who are in union with Christ are now citizens of Israel. Likewise According to Ephesians 3: 4-6, God made known a mystery to Paul "...the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel."

Partakers of what promise? The promises given to Israel to Abraham of course. Did not God promise to Abraham that through him all the nations would be blessed? And since the Paul elsewhere asserts that the gospel was preached to Abraham beforehand (Gal 3:8), the OT and NT saints were both saved by the same grace in Christ and are members of the same body .... partakers of the same covenant promises. The difference is simply (if you think about it organically) that one was a mere seedling or imature branch and the other a fully mature fruit-bearning tree, but both are part of the same tree. The OT saints saw Christ from a distance in promises and shadows, yet in God's economy those regenerate were, even then, united to Christ, part of the same body and saved by the same blood ... the blood which the signposts of the temple sacrifices pointed to.

And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. (Heb 11: 39, 40)

Just as we can never separate the law from the lawgiver, we likewise cannot separate the benefits from the benefactor. Many in modern day evangelicalism have wrongly divided the people of God, evewn while Paul here was at pains to show them both in union with Christ. Since Paul stressed the importance of this lets look afresh at the Scripture beyond our traditions and errors regarding this issue. The Text of Scripture is not Israelocentric but Christocentric. Jesus himself bore witness to this: "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me." (John 5:39)

James, the Sermon on the Mount squashed any hopes ever achieving life through the law. The law brings with it condemnation and death, umteen verses can be quoted to support this, I thought for sure you knew this?

I think we are in agreement on this Twosparrows.

It is just in your original post you first say "the letter kills" which is Biblical, you were just repeating 2 Cor.3:6

But then in the same post you said, "the covenant kills", which is not true.

So, I think we are in agreement.

Also, the people of God, at least many of them knew long before Jesus came that they could not obey God's law perfectly, and we have plenty of Scripture in the Old Testament that supports this idea.

In Christ,

James

James, don't mean to sabotage a good agreement, but do you see a difference between the letter of the law and the old covenant?

these are all Deuteronomy 11:18 so it was not just when YAHSHUA came that we were to write them on our hearts

Although when YAHSHUA came as the LIVING TORAH as HE is The WORD and HE is alive HE interpreted the Torah for us in ways we could apply them inwardly as we were always to do so,,,,it has been laid upon me today to focus on writing these commands on my heart to wash the inside of the vessel if you will, our Shabbat service today had these verses in it,,so great that you posted this and i love you

may YAHSHUA write these commands on your heart and your names in HIS Book of Life everlasting

Icebro,

Brother, with all do respect, you kinda got off in the first sentence. Under the New Covenant it is Not Us who writes the law on our hearts and minds, it is YHWH!

Brother if we follow the Old Covenant, then what is 'New' about the New Covenant?

The long and short of it is this whosoever still needs to hear the word of God on any given topic for faith to come according to the topic.

yes yes brother i see what you mean and all respect to you as well brother i am very very happy at this post,,you have posted a great question

i was trying to show that this thought of writing these on our hearts was given even before YAHSHUA walked with us but YHWH knew we would break these commands HE even told us we would and then we did it anyway????

but the difference is YAHSHUA,, HE has lifted this curse for the Torah was a curse to us if we break it and a blessing to us if we kept it,,but we did not keep it,,if we had written it on our hearts before we would have no need of MESSIAH to die for us,,but we are corruptible flesh that must be nailed to that cross and we must take up our stake and walk with MESSIAH as a living sacrifices everyday,,and everyday listening and doing,,, it is not the law that was corrupt but it is us and now we have MESSIAH to not only cover those sins and shortcomings but to completely take them away,,does that give us right to sin? let it not be,,for sin is lawlessness ,,,the FATHER i believe is teaching us everyday as you would agree,,is HE going to write the whole Torah on your heart in one day? if HE did could you learn it all in one day? no we know that we walk a little and learn a little everyday in pray and ask AUBBA FATHER what is your will for me this day? HE will give us our portion each day and every week (for me ) on Shabbat i look back on the last week and hopefully i can see that i have grown in knowing HIS commands for i have lived them and yes they are written on my heart by HIM,,,,that is why we come to HIM on HIS appointed times because we either see where YAHSHUA lived out these rehearsals and fulfilled them or is going to and has shown how HE going to do so,,so we gather and act these out by keeping the very things that HE did like Passover and Unleavened Bread,First Fruits,Shavu'ot ,Trumpets,Atonement , and Sukkot

sorry for going on

yes YHWH will write them on our hearts and HE does everyday but we have to except HIS SON and what HE did in order to understand what YHWH is writing

the people when they listened to YAHSHUA were so amazed cause they finally heard the Torah being explained by someone who had authority to do so but HE explained in a way that people said "this is not hard for the pharisees have added to and taken from the Torah to put heavy yokes on us" they were so happy to hear YAHSHUA explain it by applying it to their lives,,the Torah always has been about love always..if you read the Torah you will see that YHWH was showing us how to live with each other in harmony and how to be a good bride,(which we had to be divorced from our contract in order to pick up the new one for we hored with the nations)but HE knew we would fight and we would sin so therefore HE made provisions for such

okay i will stop sorry to go on and on yes HE writes them but we have to listen and seek HIM,there is no curse through YAHSHUA MESSIAH

i love you brother i pray that your day is filled with blessings,,i pray that you and all who you contact see the love that you have for MESSIAH and YHWH,,i pray that your light be as bright as the sun forever ,i pray that your loved ones be touch by the Hand of YHWH and that HIS face looks on them and you all of your days,,may the sweet smell of obedience come from you dear brother,,our FATHER loves us and HE has given us the greatest gift ever,,the gift to be with HIM forever and that to me is the greatest gift ,,,i will see you in the Kingdom brother ,,stop by my room sometime you are always welcome,,and anyone else too i love you all

Icebro,

Brother I believe the laws that YHWH writes on peoples hearts in the New Covenant are not the same for everyone. For some it may be the Torah, for others it may just be "Love the LORD with all your heart mind and strength, and Love your neighbor as yourself."

those last two you said are Torah ,,if you love GOD with all your heart and strength then you are going to want to be obedient and if you love your neighbor you are going to love them how it says in Torah,,,we live Torah and don't realize it a lot cause what we think of Torah is not always positive but it is,,so loving GOD with your whole heart means you are going to do as HE wants not as you want ,that is how YAHSHUA lived remember HE said oh if this cup be taken away from me BUT I am here to do the will of the FATHER so let it be,,,,HE was always keeping the will of the FATHER and HE is the most perfect example of the Torah being lived out and HE lived exactly what you just wrote so Torah is love your GOD with all your heart mind ,body and soul and love your neighbor better than yourself

Praise YHWH brother have a great day!!!
