Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 02:08 AMHas it ever occured to anyone to ever debate the OPPOSITE side of a issue in order to see if your own side can hold water, and/or to see if you can shoot holes in your own? Wouldn't that increase everyone's honesty around here? |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 02:34 AMOh, and please don't tell me you don't have to. That wasn't the question. The question is have you ever considered it or actually done it. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 05:03 AMIsn't that the way science approaches a theory? One postulates a theory and then does everything they can to disprove it. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 05:16 AMTo look at scripture that way one would have to put aside tradition and empty themselves of bias and say let the chips fall where they may. My approach to a topic is to write down all the key words that pertain to a particualr subject and then go to a concordance and commentary to try and draw a conclusion. Also, I'll google a subject and find out what the opposite view is and look all all the scriptures they use. Gotta start somewhere. Here's an example: the JW's will come around and say that Jesus isn't God. I'll say show me the scripture you use. They show me 2 and neither are even close. I'll say, is that all you have. They'll say at the moment. OK, when you come back bring me more verses to prove your point. They say OK. When they come back they have nothing and then say, "I didn't think it was that important." They did this several times and then quit coming. I even used their own New World Translation against them. Shalom |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 10:59 AMInteresting idea! I can not say I have thought of trying it or done it. I may give it a try sometime though. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 12:39 PMYes, I have done this. I don't think I've done it on the Forums, but I have done it in person when talking to people. Or writing a paper for college. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 12:50 PMGreat post Marlo, Reminds me of the lady I met on here 9 months ago. She told I needed to change and I told her she needed to change. Well, if you are having a Mexican Standoff, well I tell others the truth and they give me thier opinions and if neccesary will talk to my pastor about the problem. I sometimes question many people in my life and in the forums claiming to be Christians if they are truly reborned believers living in the Holy Spirit. Most people believe in God, some do good deeds and works but the Bible clearly tells us that is not the way to Salvation. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 04:09 PMI've done debated the opposite side of an issue several times. Usually I don't do it to see if my view holds water or if I can shoot holes in it, but because someone was so adamantly sure they were right and everyone else was wrong... when I get sick of someone tearing others' faith down or saying they can't be saved because they disagree on some point that could be understood more than one way in the Bible, I do sometimes defend the side that person is against though. |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 04:32 PMI think if you just honestly consider your opponents view, and read the study the Scriptures on the point they are making, that you |

Just a thoughtPosted : 30 Jan, 2011 08:51 PMI have debated for Infant Baptism, and a couple of other lesser issues, but never anything big, like salvation. I only took the other side because no one was there to present it. I probably didn't do as well as someone who believed those things could have done. |
