Not sure if anyone has posted on this topic, but would like to see what everyone thinks on this subject.

Basically it seems like in the "Modern Church" we use prayer to ask God for everything we want, but rarely what He wants. I know a lot of people claim that God will give them the desires of their heart, but are what they asking for the desires God gave them? Shouldn't we instead be asking for what God wants for us?

James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

"Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4)

Don't get me started on this one. I have seen a good friend in anguish over this because she (and many others) have focused on the last part of that verse, that God will give the desires of his/her heart. Then they get upset when their prayers aren't answered. People take it to mean that God will give us what we want. They say "Well, God knows the desire of my heart, and He wants me to be happy."

Since when is God at our bidding? Since when are we to tell God what we want Him to do to please us?

The first part of the verse says, "Take delight in the Lord". So if we take delight in the Lord, what are we going to do? We will seek Him. His priority and His will - will be ours. We take joy in Him. So, he will give us our hearts desire because our hearts desire will be His desires.

"He will give us the desires of our heart" can be taken two ways.

The obvious way most take it may be incorrect, that is Gods gives us "what" we desire.

The way it may mean is that God gives us the "desires" before the object of our desires.

I don't think any of us should get upset because a prayer may not be answered.

Ever heard it said; Some of God's greatest blessings are unanswered prayers?

If we commit our way, our life, our ALL to Jesus, our heart's desire will be what He desires for us in the first place.

Proverbs 15:8

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Our prayer is His delight--- Now how cool is that?

Took me a minute twosparrows- but when I Got It, what you said makes perfect sense.

James 5:16

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

That scripture comforts me. I pray a lot !:prayingm:

Ugh, ya; there is so much of that "health and wealth" prosperity "gospel" stuff. The mature Christian will understand that WE are in service to God, NOT that we are to sit around like fat little princes (and princesses) having our every whim met by God -- it's all about Jesus, NOT us!! The purpose of Christianity is not our happiness. Rather, happiness/joy is the byproduct (fruit) of growing in the Spirit. When we centre our lives around Him and delight in Him, then our prayers will also be focused on Him and the things that delight Him. God desires a relationship with us that is uninhibited by worldly things; this sometimes means stripping of us of the stuff that gets in the way, even we think we want those things. If we also desire that close communion with God, then we'll be able to find joy and delight in NOT having our worldly desires met; we'll recognize that it's easier to be closer to God when there's not so much clutter (not just the physical kind!) in the way. Does that even make sense? I feel like I'm talking in circles! It's late and I've been typing ALL night (homework).

If we delight ourselves in the Lord, His desires will become the desires of our hearts. If our focus is on Him, we won't desire anything outside His will.

Have any of you tried to get a Prayer study going at your church? I've asked several times. I'd like to learn how to pray without it being a grocery list. You know, Dear God, please bless A, B, and C; please heal D, E, and F, and Your will be done. Amen. How to get it to be a *conversation*. If any of you have ideas, I'd love to hear them; this is another thing I struggle with.

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.=== Revelation 5:8

I believe God wants us to ask Him for Everything-- no matter how small or BIG- but if you ask Him for a million dollars and don't get it that's no reason to get mad and whine 'Poor me'.

He can hear before we speak and answer before we ask but prayer should be a Big part of a Christian's life.

I've never asked for a million dollars--- but if I needed it I wouldn't ask the bank; I'd ask The One who OWNS ALL THE BANKS!

Our heart's desire should be simple---- we should desire Him to put the right desires in our heart. If He has put the desires there to begin with, there will be no question of whether or not He'll give us our hearts desire. Of course He will.

I think that's what prayers are, Mountain Lass--- just conversations with God.

How a person has that conversation is up to the indvidual.
