What is a name?
Posted : 10 Sep, 2010 09:04 AM

I use to be a ski instructor and would have students in my class from all over the world. One time I had 4 Chinese men in my class and the names they gave me were Tom, John, Robert & Steve. They could barely speak English so after hearing those names I said, wait a minute what are your real names? After hearing them I was thankful they chose to use Tom, John, Robert & Steve because I would have never been able to repeat there real names. Later I talked with another instructor that had worked around the world in the oil industry before he retired and he was telling me it is common practice for a man from one county to adopt a name that is familiar to the country they are in.

The practice of name changing from culture to culture is not uncommon it was even done in the Bible. Joseph was given a new name in Egypt. Danial's name was changed in Babylon and his 3 friends, not many people memorize their Hebrew names but we all know Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego.

My Bible calls the Savior "Jesus". Why the English translator called Yahshua Jesus I do not know and do not care, millions through the centuries including me have "accepted" Jesus as the name of the LORD and Savior. Until recently anyone taking about the savior would call him Jesus.

My question is, why is the name Jesus not acceptable anymore in the English tongue? I still pray in Jesus' name, is that wrong? Would I have a closer walk with God if I change His name that I have used all my life?

I am not trying to be disrespectful here, just wondering.

GOD has many names and each in the Hebrew has a meaning, Greek and Latin translations for those names are equivalent as best can be to hold the meaning and importance there of...

Hebrew...translated to Greek...translated to Latin...translated to English...that is a lot of translations...:excited:

The name Jesus* I believe comes from the translation from Latin to English...I'm I right ?...I dont know for sure and it really does not matter to me...What does matter to is that I Respect ALL names of GOD and the English Bible says Jesus* is LORD...that is Good enough for me...

My name is Judy...not Judith...it has a Meaning...My whole life my family and friends have called me Jude...My name means the samething no matter what name I, you or anyone calls me by...and I will answer to any of them......Anywho...thats my two bits...xo

@ Mr row.

Names are important, especially the name of YHWH and his compound names:

El-Shaddai,El elyon,EL ghibbor,Jehovah Shalom,Jehovah Rapha,etc.

Each name of YHWH reveals his character, attitude and personality to those He made Himself and His name known to..

Yeshua-Ha-Messhiach: is Hebrew for Yeshua the Messiah.

Jesus Christ is Greek:when pronounced is Hey Zues Christos

which stands for,The Saviour who annoints

Jesus also means:The son of Zues

Jesus pronounced is HA Zues which sounds like Hey Zues.

MrRow asked ~ My question is, why is the name Jesus not acceptable anymore in the English tongue? I still pray in Jesus' name, is that wrong? Would I have a closer walk with God if I change His name that I have used all my life?

Jude replies ~ It is Most Acceptable...Arent we Honord and Blessed as Gentiles and Christians to Claim the Name above all Names...Jesus*...

And No ! MrRow...Your walk with OUR Lord would not be more personal or closer if you changed the name you have always used for Our LORD...xo

With all due respect Trucker George...I respect an appreciate your vast knowledge of the Hebrew/Israel/Jewish names...I my self study a Torah/Bible combo because I choose to...but as MrRow stated and I will come into agreement with him here...We are not Hebrew, Greek or Latin...You may continue to share here but no doubt will be met much resistance...May GOD continue to Bless you and yours today and always...In Jesus* name...Amen ! Amen !!...xo

I don't think it matters. I wonder what the angels call "Yeshua" in angel-speak?

The Angels call Him Holy, Holy Holy. Actually I think they call Him King of Kings and Lord of Lords since that is His name now.

Jesus in Hebrew was translated Joshua in the OT. It is a name that means savior. Mat 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

I think names are important because they are a telling of character and nature. This isn't true in every case but it is sometimes true and I think it's interesting that if a person learns the meaning of their name they may try subconsciously or intentionally to live up to it. I know I try to live up to my name. That's mostly because I chose my last name and I want to be identified as that kind of person. It is a reflection of my gifts and the view of myself that Father gave to me in a dream. That and it cost $250.00 to get it so I'm not going to waste it!!
