The Bible mentions at least 2 kinds of fear. One is the fear of the Lord. The other is the fear of man. When we rightly fear the Lord we don’t need to fear men. Easier said than done!!
The fear of the Lord is a reverential awe of all he is and his many attributes including his wrath.
The fear of man is a misplaced fear. Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Ps111:10 (ESV) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).
Psalm 56:11 “In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
We fear telling others about Jesus.
We fear the future.
We fear light-weight pandemics like the corona-virus which kills less people than the flu.
So many things to fear on earth
Fear hangs on to this life at all costs.
Fear doesn’t trust the sovereignty of God.
Fear is like Peter looking at the sudden waves even in the presence of Jesus who demonstrated power over the waves.
Like the Israelites who constantly feared many things like Pharaoh, running out of food, the threats of new enemies and alllllll kinda stuff.
If I were there with them, I would be just as fearful of everything just like they were. I know for sure I wouldn’t be faithful like Moses!!
So the verse in Timothy was meant for me, to remind me to stop being so stinking fearful of everything and start having the proper fear of God and to start trusting God’s decisions, which often conflict with mine
Moon, you have forgotten to post one very important piece of information by which a person can answer your question; the CONTEXT.
Without the context a person can answer any way they choose.
2 Timothy 1 verses 1 - 14
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy [and] peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day,
4 longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy.
5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that [it is] in you as well.
6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with [me] in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,
9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,
10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.
12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.
13 Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to [you].
In verse 7 Paul reminds Timothy of the spirit that GOD Almighty has given to him, and to all believers, a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.
Timothy might have been afraid to proclaim the Gospel as Timothy was an Evangelist; The results of proclaiming the Gospel that he had witnessed in the life of Paul and other believers namely prison and beatings, may not have been what Timothy had expected.
