Question: "What is repentance and is it necessary for salvation?"
Answer: Many understand the term repentance to mean “a turning from sin.” Regretting sin and turning from it is related to repentance, but it is not the precise meaning of the word. In the Bible, the word repent means “to change one’s mind.” The Bible also tells us that true repentance will result in a change of actions (Luke 3:8–14; Acts 3:19). In summarizing his ministry, Paul declares, “I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” (Acts 26:20). The full biblical definition of repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of action.
What, then, is the connection between repentance and salvation? The book of Acts especially focuses on repentance in regard to salvation (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 11:18; 17:30; 20:21; 26:20). To repent, in relation to salvation, is to change your mind regarding sin and Jesus Christ. In Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), he concludes with a call for the people to repent (Acts 2:38). Repent from what? Peter is calling the people who rejected Jesus (Acts 2:36) to change their minds about that sin and to change their minds about Christ Himself, recognizing that He is indeed “Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). Peter is calling the people to change their minds, to abhor their past rejection of Christ, and to embrace faith in Him as both Messiah and Savior.
Repentance involves recognizing that you have thought wrongly in the past and determining to think rightly in the future. The repentant person has “second thoughts” about the mindset he formerly embraced. There is a change of disposition and a new way of thinking about God, about sin, about holiness, and about doing God’s will. True repentance is prompted by “godly sorrow,” and it “leads to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Repentance and faith can be understood as two sides of the same coin. It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about your sin and about who Jesus is and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ.
Repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one can repent and come to God unless God pulls that person to Himself (John 6:44). Repentance is something God gives—it is only possible because of His grace (Acts 5:31; 11:18). No one can repent unless God grants repentance. All of salvation, including repentance and faith, is a result of God drawing us, opening our eyes, and changing our hearts. God’s longsuffering leads us to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), as does His kindness (Romans 2:4).
While repentance is not a work that earns salvation, repentance unto salvation does result in works. It is impossible to truly change your mind without that causing a change in action. In the Bible, repentance results in a change in behavior. That is why John the Baptist called people to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8). A person who has truly repented of his sin and exercised faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:19–23; James 2:14–26).
To see what repentance looks like in real life, all we need to do is turn to the story of Zacchaeus. Here was a man who cheated and stole and lived lavishly on his ill-gotten gains—until he met Jesus. At that point he had a radical change of mind: “Look, Lord!” said Zacchaeus. “Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount” (Luke 19:8). Jesus happily proclaimed that salvation had come to Zacchaeus’s house, and that even the tax collector was now “a son of Abraham” (verse 9)—a reference to Zacchaeus’s faith. The cheat became a philanthropist; the thief made restitution. That’s repentance, coupled with faith in Christ.
Repentance, properly defined, is necessary for salvation. Biblical repentance is changing your mind about your sin—no longer is sin something to toy with; it is something to be forsaken as we “flee from the coming wrath” (Matthew 3:7). It is also changing your mind about Jesus Christ—no longer is He to be mocked, discounted, or ignored; He is the Savior to be clung to; He is the Lord to be worshiped and adored.

No one can come to Me **UNLESS** the Father who sent Me **DRAWS HIM**, and I will raise him up at the Last Day!!... No one can come to Me **UNLESS** the Father has **ENABLED THEM**!!"
Ephesians 2:8,9: For it is by **GRACE** you have been saved, through **FAITH**—and this **NOT FROM YOURSELVES**, it is the **GIFT OF GOD**—not by works. So that no one can boast. For we are **GOD'S WORKMANSHIP**, created in Christ Jesus to do **GOOD WORKS**, which God prepared in advance for us to do!
Romans 12:3: For by the **GRACE GIVEN ME** I say to every one of you. We have different gifts, according to the **GRACE GIVEN TO EACH OF US**!!
Romans 9:15,16,18: God says, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God's mercy...Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to harden. {But God's saints still preach God's Word to everyone}
John 15:16: Jesus says, You did not choose Me, but I **CHOSE YOU**and appointed you so that you might bear **FRUIT**--**FRUIT** that will last!!

John 13:18: Jesus says, "I am not referring to all of you, I know those I have **CHOSEN**!
Ephesians 1:4-8; 11,12: In love He **PREDESTINED** us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will--to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves, In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding... In Him we were also **CHOSEN**, having been **PREDESTINED** in accordance to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity to the purpose of His will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be to the **PRAISE OF HIS GLORY**!!
I Thessalonians 1:4: For we know, brothers loved by God, that He has **CHOSEN YOU**, because our Gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction!
I Peter 2:9: But you are a **CHOSEN PEOPLE**, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you might declare the praise of Him who **CALLED YOU** out of darkness into His wonderful light!!

Romans 6:23: The wages of sin is death, but the **GIFT OF GOD** is **ETERNAL LIFE**!
God's Word clearly teaches that faith, salvation, the Holy Spirit and eternal life are all 100 percent **FREE GIFTS OF GOD** and that the two main incentives for doing good works is being thankful to God for these amazing **FREE GIFTS** and to **EARN HEAVENLY ETERNAL REWARDS** which God has promised His chosen saints for faithful and loving service. Whereas those who believe in **SINLESS PERFECTION** believe that we have to earn our salvation and eternal life by doing **GOOD WORKS** and being **SINLESS** and that the only eternal reward is gaining eternal life by what we do; and if we commit even one small sin after we are saved we will loose our salvation and eternal life. And so man and not God becomes the Author and Finisher of our salvation.
**BUT WHAT DOES GOD'S WORD SAY**??
**AND SO SALVATION IS 100 PERCENT **FREE** but **ETERNAL REWARDS** are 100 percent **EARNED**!!
Ephesians 6:8: Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will **REWARD** everyone for what ever good he does!

2 Corinthians 5:9,10: We make it our goal to please Him... for we must all appear before the Judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
1 Corinthians 3:13-15: His work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his **REWARD**. If it is burned up he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
How to Win Heavenly CROWNS:
I Corinthians 9:24-27: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes in to strict training. They do it to get a **CROWN** that will not last; but we do it to get a **CROWN THAT WILL LAST FOREVER**! Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize!
2 John 1:8: Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be **REWARDED** fully!.

So many think all you have to do is believe. its called "easy believism" and they have no change in their lives whatsoever. I have probably offended quite a few because I won't compromise. Example : TV content of a sexual nature. I get up and leave or say that I cant sit through it to the person's dismay. I guess I am too puritan. for them. I am not thought to be a "grown up about it!!" LOL. I have heard how "It's a good movie!...You're missing out!! It's funny. There is not that much nudity in it!"
I just have too much of a responsibility to my Heavenly Father who brought me out of that once. I am not going back to it. Not for anybody.

KJVonly, Where have you been young lady, we miss you! Great example of your "works" revealing your FAITH and your free salvation in how you live everyday! Just as Kristofer777 Biblically stated that FAITH without works is JUST PLAIN dead and worthless faith! AND your "works" I say prove your FAITH! But what comes first, repentance or salvation and like the OP asked "Repentance and is it Necessary for Salvation?"
Quiznos in another thread below claims salvation comes without repentance but what does Paul say?
For Quiznos asked - "You believe Repentance ( of sin ) is necessary for salvation." end quote.
2 Corinthians 7:9,10 (NIV) "And now I rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your >>>sorrow led you to repentance.<<< For you felt the sorrow that God had intended, and so were not harmed in any way by us."
10. "Godly sorrow brings >>>repentance that leads to salvation<<< without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
So you can clearly see repentance comes BEFORE the free gift of salvation by FAITH!

Oh and what else did we learn form Paul in verse 10? That "worldly sorrow brings DEATH!" meaning what? Because the "world" is only sorry when they get caught but do NOT regret afterwards their sins, reconsider or think differently, reversal of sinful decisions! Another words no REPENTANCE of sin!
Like Richard7744 posted - Romans 6:23: "The wages of sin is **DEATH,** but the **GIFT OF GOD** is **ETERNAL LIFE**!"
And the Bible is clear now worldly sinners **DO NOT** get **Eternal life** nor **Eternal Torment** in a **FIRE** some day but **DEATH** in the one day made lake of fire! Thanks Richard7744 for sharing that verse **OF TRUTH** in your post above!

**SALVATION IS 100% FREE WHILE ETERNAL HEAVENLY REWARDS ARE 100% EARNED**!! ridiculous. salvation is NOT free...you have to do the right things to be saved. Heavenly rewards are NOT earned, millions of people do "good works" but have evil hearts and they go to hell.
**SALVATION IS 100% FREE WHICH INCLUDES THE FREE GIFT OF REPENTANCE**!!
Again, this is foolishness. Salvation is NOT free. you dont stand in line and say "I'll take some of that free salvation. _Oh yes, give me some free repentence also...._ just saying you repent and then falling into the same old grind eliminates your momentary thoughts of being good.
NEW CHRISTIANS... study for yourself, do not believe this garbage.

Thanks Hugs, it's nice to be missed,. I moved to the mountains which has been a huge change for me with the higher elevation as I am still adjusting. I hope to be on here more often as I settle in. Still some unpacking to do but thankfully its about done. One of the things that surprised me upon arriving here is how many homeless people call Colorado home. it's sad. One was in a wheelchair and was in an auto wreck according to his sign, some don't even carry signs, they just hang their head , slumped over with their head on their knees, some have signs that say they need medical marijuana, most carry their homes on their backs in the form of backpacks or hobo bags. I told my husband that they remind me or turtles. Its a culture shock for sure. I am not used to seeing gas stations with the announcement "GAS and GRASS" LOL

I think a lot of people are confused about what it means to be saved.
Some think we’re saved by grace only. Some think we’re saved by adding good works to grace.
This confusion probably results from the removal of certain verses from their original contexts and quoting them as proof for whatever belief one has chosen.
For example, Titus 3:4 says: “but when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”
This verse and a great many others, when examined in their original contexts, show we are saved by grace only.
But another verse, often removed from it’s context and quoted to prove salvation is by works, is James 2:14 which says, “ What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?“
But if anyone wants to take a little time to read the verse in context, it will become clear that saving faith results in a change of behavior. James doesn’t say that one must first work to receive salvation.
I hope readers will take time to look at both verses in their fuller contexts, at least a chapter worth of context.
In the meantime, think about the following verse which sums up the relationship between works and grace. It’s found in Ephesians 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.”
So, we’re first saved only by grace THEN we can do the good works God prepared for us to do.
The good works don’t save, only grace saves. Good works, like James says, are the result of a redeemed heart that now wants to love and obey Jesus.
But here’s where it gets kinda sticky for some people. Can you get saved without good works? The answer is yes, but you can’t prove to yourself or to others that you truly have salvation—without evidence. The evidence is in the fruit you bear, in the form of your good works. If you have no evidence of salvation, you’re probably not saved.
In other words, a practicing adulterer who claims he’s saved by grace but has no good works or change of behavior to show for it, better think really hard about the salvation he doesn’t have.
