It really depends on what your looking for while you can't find it in the written tradition you find it in the oral tradition. The Scripture that most people turn to is the commandment "thou shalt not kill", from their the idea is that life is a gift given by God which should not be spurned. The writings that most rely on are St. Augustine (who recanted all of his writings), and St. Thomas Aquinas, in the West, in the Eastern part of Christianity their is no code, for as such.
Praise the LORD JESUS CHRIST and Peace be unto you my dear sister. To answer your question:
1. The WORD of GOD says that we are to love our neighbors as a love ourselves.
2. If one hates his brother, that person is a murder.
3. No murderer has eternal life dwelling in him.
This shows us: Murder doesn't equal love; Love doesn't produce murder.
We have been bought with a price and have no right to take our own lives. We belong to GOD and must glorify HIM in our bodies. Suide doesn't glorify GOD. (I Cor 6:19-20)
Suicide is not the answer to any of our problems, but JESUS CHRIST is. Sin and the devil would lead a person that way, but using the words of Paul who address a man who was about the kill himself, "Do yourself no harm." That man came to JESUS and got saved.
This is not to say that you are contemplating suicide, but in general, I put this information out there, by the grace of GOD.
JESUS came so that we could have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) Fullness of Joy, Peace, Love, Faith, Hope, and much more is what JESUS gives; while the devil desires to kill, steal, and destroy.
Suicide is the destruction of one's life. JESUS said HE didn't come to destroy men's lives but to save them. (Lk 9:56)
It's not a chance we want to take though GOD is Merciful and Forgiving.
Our bodies are the temple of GOD. If any person defiles the temple of GOD, that person GOD shall destroy. For the temple of GOD is Holy. I Cor 3:17
No matter what we go through in Life, the prayer of Faith will save us, through JESUS CHRIST.
Meaning the GOD can and will deliver us, help us, heal us, comfort us, strenghten us, or do some other good thing for us, depending on the situation, after HIS own Bless Will and Purpose.
In short, one would have to question if the SPIRIT of GOD is dwelling in a person who can murder (themselves or anyone else), since no murderer has eternal life dwelling inside of his/her heart.
But All in All James 4:12 lets us know that there is One JUDGE and that is GOD. Amen.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Romans 4:15 (King James Version) 15
Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Romans 5:20 (King James Version) 20
Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Galatians 3:19 (King James Version) 19
Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Thanks for the answers so far...it is appreciated. I know there are a lot of different opinions about this - and I wanted to hear the opinions of Christians.
We have to remember that suicide isn't done out of anger. What one person can handle, someone else may find overwhelming.
We all backslide from time to time and it differs in severity. Sometimes this backsliding is caused by lack of faith. We take matters into our own hands because we're unsure God can handle it (again, lack of faith). Does that mean if I'm having a momentary lack of faith in God and I die, I'm not saved? No. Does suicide automatically rate me as an unbeliever? Absolutely no.
If I have accepted Christ, the Bible tells me I am no longer under condemnation (Romans 8:1). I have absolute assurance of forgiveness. We can't compartmentalize sin and say that grace is only reserved for "acceptable" sins. There is no such thing.
I think it's all a matter of whether or not the person had accepted Christ in their life.
But concening your answer, Romans Chapter 8 speaks much more. No condemnation is to those who walk not after the flesh, but after the SPIRIT. Those who live after the flesh and die that way are in danger. If you live after the flesh, you shall die. (Rom 8:13) Accepting CHRIST is good, but staying with CHRIST is Eternal Life. Heb 3:14 - We must not take the grace of GOD and turn it into lasciviousness. Jude v4. Praise the LORD!
