Holy Spirit:Who is He,What is He like,What is His purpose

The Holy Spirit:
He is the third person within the triune Godhead.
He is co-equal with the Father and the SON.
He is Omnipotent,Omnipresent,and Omniscient.
The Holy Spirit is involved both within the creation of everything we can see and cannot see.
And He is involved with the Salvation of man.
Yet the Holy Spirit is the most unknown person of the Triune Godhead,
And He is the most misunderstood person in the Godhead.
There have been attributed 'Events,Movements',sayings,and a host of other things,that are not spoken of within the Scriptures which He the Holy Spirit had empowered men to write.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth,would He not have recorded in Scripture that which He is responsible for.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Let us look into the WORD of GOD and see the Holy Spirit as revealed by the Father,and the Son.
The Holy Spirit is 'GENTLE'
Gen 1:1 In the beginning of God's preparing the heavens and the earth--
Gen 1:2 the earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness is on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters,
The Holy Spirit is 'WISE',He empowers people to do as GOD would have them to do.
Exo 31:1 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
Exo 31:2 `See, I have called by name Bezaleel, son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,
Exo 31:3 and I fill him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all work,
Exo 31:4 to devise devices to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,
Exo 31:5 and in graving of stone for settings, and in graving of wood to work in all work.
Exo 31:6 `And I, lo, I have given with him Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, and in the heart of every wise-hearted one I have given wisdom, and they have made all that which I have commanded thee.
Jdg 3:10 and the Spirit of Jehovah is upon him, and he judgeth Israel, and goeth out to battle, and Jehovah giveth unto his hand Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram, and strong is his hand against Chushan-Rishathaim;
Jdg 3:11 and the land resteth forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dieth,
The Holy Spirit speaks:
2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of Jehovah hath spoken by me, And His word is on my tongue.
2Sa 23:3 He said--the God of Israel--to me, He spake--the Rock of Israel: He who is ruling over man is righteous, He is ruling in the fear of God.
Mat 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
Mat 10:20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
Act 8:29 And the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and join yourself to this chariot.
Rev 2:7 The one who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To the one overcoming, I will give to him to eat of the Tree of Life which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.
The Holy Spirit in prophesy:
Isa 11:1 And a rod hath come out from the stock of Jesse, And a branch from his roots is fruitful.
Isa 11:2 Rested on him hath the Spirit of Jehovah, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and fear of Jehovah.
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is on me, Because Jehovah did anoint me To proclaim tidings to the humble, He sent me to bind the broken of heart, To proclaim to captives liberty, And to bound ones an opening of bands.
Isa 61:2 To proclaim the year of the good pleasure of Jehovah, And the day of vengeance of our God, To comfort all mourners.
Isa 61:3 To appoint to mourners in Zion, To give to them beauty instead of ashes, The oil of joy instead of mourning, A covering of praise for a spirit of weakness, And He is calling to them, `Trees of righteousness, The planting of Jehovah--to be beautified.'
Fulfilled:
Luk 4:17 And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And unrolling the book, He found the place where it was written:
Luk 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. Because of this He anointed Me to proclaim the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me" to heal the brokenhearted, "to proclaim remission to captives, and to the blind to see again," to send away the ones being crushed, in remission,
Luk 4:19 "to preach an acceptable year of the Lord." Isa. 61:1, 2
Holy Spirit can be grieved:
The Isa 63:10 And they have rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit, And He turneth to them for an enemy, He Himself hath fought against them.
Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed to the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit in Salvation of man:
John 3:5 Jesus answered, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God;
John 3:6 that which hath been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which hath been born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:7 `Thou mayest not wonder that I said to thee, It behoveth you to be born from above;
John 6:63 the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;
The Holy Spirit 'LEADS PEOPLE INTO WORSHIPPING YESHUA'
Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.'
John 4:22 ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;
John 4:23 but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;
John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.
The Holy Spirit;Leads,guides,teaches,and He reveals things to come.
John 16:13 and when He may come--the Spirit of truth--He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;
The Holy Spirit glorifies Yeshua:
Joh 16:14 He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.
The 'MAIN WORKING of The Holy Spirit' is to glorify Yeshua.
iAct 1:8 but you will receive power, the Holy Spirit coming
upon you, and you will be witnesses of Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
The Holy Spirit empowers people with the Charisma/gifts
to further the Gospel.
1Co 12:4 And there are differences of gifts, but the same Spirit;
1Co 12:5 and there are differences of ministries, yet the same Lord.
The Holy Spirit reveals His life in the believer:
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 meekness, self-control. Against such things there is not a law.
There are some groups of people which follow,chase,and seek,the Holy Spirit.
Yet we are not called to this,but rather to seek FIRST the KINGSHIP of GOD.
Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Some pray to the HOLY SPIRIT;Yet Yeshua tells us WHO we are to be praying to.
Mat 6:6 But you, when you pray, enter into your room and shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret. And your Father seeing in secret will repay you in the open.
Mat 6:7 But when you pray, do not be babbling vain words, as the nations; for they think that they shall be heard in their much speaking.
Mat 6:8 Then do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him.
Mat 6:9 So, then, you should pray this way: Our Father who is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
The Holy Spirit does not bring any attention to HIMSELF.
Rather He brings all the ATTENTION to YESHUA.
John 16:13 But when that One comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you into all Truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will announce the coming things to you.
John 16:14 That One will glorify Me, for He will receive from Mine and will announce to you.
There is so much more,that others can add to this.

Hi Shalom:
You are tooo fuuuuunny;hahahahahahahahahaha
For this week,i happen to be Mr.Merciful,Humorously,this is the name my close friends call me
They know me a little bit,hahahahahaha
From Genesis to Revelation,there is Biblical evidence that shows that The Triune Godhead is indeed real.
The Father,The Son and The Holy Spirit,each are.
Omnipotant
Omnipresent
Omniscient
Each person could have created and sustained all of Creation.
Yet not all three could have been the Messiah.
Gal 3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
1Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Tim 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hi Merciful,
I noticed that the title of the thread is Holy Spirit: Who is he, what is he like, what is his purpose. My question is how do you know the Holy Spirit is a "HE"?
Just when I think I know something about God...my mind cannot comprehend the magnitude of his omnipotence. It was just an observation...I don't expect an answer, since no one can really explain G-d, we try hard though don't we...to analyze it all.

Hi Shalom:
Shalom says: I noticed that the title of the thread is Holy Spirit: Who is he, what is he like, what is his purpose. My question is how do you know the Holy Spirit is a "HE"?
Merciful: This is a good question.
The Jehovahs (False) Witnesses call the Holy Spirit, The impersonal force of God. Yet it is known that their Greek texts,interlinear, and writings have been changed to fit their false teachings. Even their New World Translation of the Scriptures has been changed .
Online Bible New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures John 1:1-51 1 In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word ' was a god '. 2 This one was in [the] beginning with God. 3 All things came into existence through him, and apart from him not even one thing came into existence.
Yet within the realm of LANGUAGES there are certain rules that apply to writing,understanding/ interpretation, and application.
In English and most if not all languages there is sentence and word structure which is not to be ignored.
We have:
Nouns,pronouns,
Verbs,adverbs,
adjectives, Subject and Object
Tenses of words:
Past,Present and Future tenses.
These are just a few of the means by which a sentence,and then thoughts are put into written form.
When we read to understand the Word of GOD there are rules of Language which are to be applied for understanding the Word of GOD:
These are:
Read according to the 'Context.'
Is the text to be understood:
Literally
Spiritually
Figures of speech
Parables/Parabolic
Allegories/Allegorical
Hebrew Poetry
Prophesy/Prophetic
Messianic prophesy
When is the prophesy Past,Present Future
Has the Prophesy already been fulfilled
Is the Prophesy of dual nature.
Does the Scripture being read concern The World;
Isreal,the Church or both.
There is more,yet i will stop here.
The same is said for both Hebrew,Aramaic,and Greek;
The three languages which the Scriptures have been written into.
Yet in the Hebrew texts there are:
Parables
Alogories
Hebrew Poetry Prophesy
Types of Yehsua
And shadows concerning Messiah,such as the Mercy seat Tabernacle Sacrifices Etc.
Now as far as the Holy Spirit being a person,
Within the Biblical languages we find that the Word of GOD attributes to the Holy Spirit human attibutes,and even emotions.
And WHO empowered the writers of the Scriptures, Yes you have the answer 'The Holy Spirit'.
2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Within the Greek texts the Holy Spirit is sometimes referred to as 'IT'. I believe this happens when the translation went from Hebrew into Greek with some of the Books of the NEW COVENANT.
Let us look at some of the Attributes of the Holy Spirit.
Eternal:
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Judgement:
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Strive:
H1777 דּוּן דּין dı̂yn dûn deen, doon A primitive root (compare H113); to rule; by implication to judge (as umpire); also to strive (as at law): - contend, execute (judgment), judge, minister judgment, plead (the cause), at strife, strive.
Judges :
3:10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.
John 16:7 But I tell you the truth, it is advantageous for you that I should go; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:8 And having come, that One will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.
John 16:9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe into Me;
John 16:10 and concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you no longer see Me;
John 16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
Language / speaks:
2Sa_23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
Eze_11:5 And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.
Mat 10:19 But when they deliver you up, do not be anxious how or what you should say, for it is given to you in that hour what you should say.
Mat 10:20 For you are not the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
Being grieved,vexed, mourning,and LOVE,are these not also Human Emotions. Yet these are of the Holy Spirit also.
Isa 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Grieve: G3076 λυπέω lupeō loo-peh'-o From G3077;
to distress; reflexively or passively to be sad: - cause grief, grieve, be in heaviness, (be) sorrow (-ful), be (make) sorry. Is this not what also happens when someone mourns?
Love:Agape:
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
With all of this being said,I would like to give my OWN PERSONAL understanding.
In the Scriptures we find that GOD is a Warrior:
Isa 59:16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. Isa 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
Yeshua as Shepherd,Yet not so meek and mild with the religious clergy,and those taking advantage of others.
John 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: John 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
The Holy Spirit also is a Warrior,who empowers man to doing the will of GOD.
Jdg 13:24 And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.
Jdg 13:25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
Jdg 14:6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Man,has been created in the Image of GOD.
A man has been created as a Warrior,to protect and provide for his family,the widow,orphan and the poor. Adam was told to 'KEEP / GUARD' the garden.
This is the role of the man,not the woman.
Shalom
Mr.Merciful
Shalom says:
Just when I think I know something about God...my mind cannot comprehend the magnitude of his omnipotence.
It was just an observation.
Mreciful: Do not be hard with yourself.
In His time,the Holy Spirit reveals to us Who GOD is,and What He is like.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
1Co 13:12 For now we see through a mirror in dimness, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will fully know even as I also was fully known.

Ellas says: Hi Shalom,
To answer your question: "My question is how do you know the Holy Spirit is a "HE"?"
We know that the Holy Spirit is a "He" , becasue we are told that He is the third person of the Godhead, who is the Father, the Son(Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit three persons in ONE, and they make up the Godhead. This is in the OP, but it was not followed upon to answer your question....
The Holy Spirit is identified as God HImself/the Spirit of Jesus Christ and you can find this in John chapter 14, chapter15, and chpater 16. When the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, this mean Christ and God are living on the inside of us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the living God/Jesus Christ.
To explain who God is for you, is to know that He is self-determined,a nd is a non material personal being, all powerful, God is Spirit, this is why we are to worship Him in our spirit and in truth..., God's Holy Spirit connected to our human spirit. God is infinite, eternal, supreme and He is never changin in His being, He is wisdom, and Holy, goodness and truth. Hope that helps a little:laugh:
Also, I've noticed and was wondering why you are not spelling out God 's full name instead you sometimes spell it G-d, is that a part of your religion or what?... just asking.Thanks

I appreciate your thoughtful reply Mr. Merciful and Ella.
I have been a christian for over 20+yrs. and have learned a lot about G-d, but when he reveals a totally different aspect of his character that I haven't experienced before, it tends to blow your mind. I have been into OT for the past year and leaning toward messianic beliefs, discovering hebrew roots and G-d has been showing me the many idols we can have in our lives.
Regarding Holy Spirit, I understand he is third person of Godhead, however, in the word we are not to greive the Holy Spirit or speak against him, (blasphemy). The Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove, gentle and a comforter and speaks to us in a still small voice. I believe God the Father is protecting the Holy Spirit because he is more easily hurt. The Holy Spirit glorifies the son King Jesus, who is a warrior, in addition to his other attributes. The Holy Spirit does not bring glory to himself, for these reasons I sensed a feminine aspect of the Holy Spirit. Just my thoughts, nothing I can reference...
The custom of substituting the word "God" with G-d in English is based on the traditional practice in Jewish law of giving God's Hebrew name a high degree of respect and reverence. When written or printed, God's Hebrew name (and many of the stand in names used to refer to God) cannot be erased or destroyed. (See below)
There is no prohibition in Jewish law against writing out or erasing the word "God" in English. However, many Jews have afforded the word "God" with the same level of respect as the Hebrew equivalents. Because of this, many Jews substitute "God with G-d so that they can erase or dispose of the writing without showing disrespect to God. Some Jews also use G!d in the same way, utilizing the exclamation point to convey their enthusiasm for Judaism and God.
Hebrew Names for God
Over the centuries the Hebrew name for God has accumulated many layers of tradition in Judaism.
* The Ancient Name of God: The Hebrew name for God, YHWH (in Hebrew spelled yud-hay-vav-hay), is never pronounced out loud in Judaism. When it appears in Jewish scripture or liturgy, the reader substitutes the Hebrew word "adonai" which means "my lord" or often just "the Lord." Any book that contains this name written in Hebrew is treated with reverence. The name is never destroyed, erased, or effaced and any books or writings containing the name cannot be thrown away according to Jewish law. They are stored in a genizah (special gathering place in a synagogue) until they can be given a proper burial in a Jewish cemetery.
* Adonai: Among many traditional Jews even the word "adonai" is not spoken outside of prayer services. Because "adonai" is so closely linked to the name of God, over time it has been accorded more and more reverence as well. Outside of prayer services, traditional Jews will replace "adonai" with "HaShem" meaning "the Name" or some other way of referring to God without using "adonai."
* Other Names to Refer to God: Because YHWH and adonai are not used casually, literally dozens of different ways to refer to God have developed in Judaism. Each name is linked to different conceptions of God's nature and aspects of the divine. For example, God can be referred to in Hebrew as "the Merciful One," "Master of the Universe," "the Creator," and "our King," amongst many other names.:bow:

Ella said: Shalom, please don't feel like the long ranger. I too, experience many different things about God, and it seems like everyday:laugh:... its like, just when you THINK you've got HIm all figured out and understand who He is, or His word He truns the tables and show you another part of who He is, and a clearer understanding in His word of what you THOUGHT you knew. Sometimes its confusing, well, not so much confusing as it is as you say BLOWS YOUR MIND!and other times its like, WOW!...I did see that when I read it the first time, what is going on:laugh:
But as you know, its all a part of growing in His grace toward spiritutal maturity and being transformed into the image of Christ, and learning to know God in character as He is...we are able then to discern truth from error, becaseu we will know what is His character and what isn't His character in many things.
Sometimes its also frighting when He continues to reveal Himsefl, but this is also why He told many of His servants throughout His word and tells us not to be afraid when He shows Himself to us. Going in search of Him in His word is how the Holy Spriit reveals Himself to us, and we come into a sound personal relationship with Him rooted and gorunded in His knowledge and understandign and wisdom of who He is in character as a real person. Yep!...He is terrible!:yay:
God bless you in your continue studying of His Holy word... it is a never ending process if we are to grow up spiritual as Paul says in Hebrews 5, and be mature Christians no longer drinking milk but eating the meat solid food of His Holy Word, and leave behind the baic elementary things to seek out HIs mysteries.
Keep up your good work, I realiy enjoy your comments and posts!:dancingp::peace:
