I think we all agree [except maybe PJ] that in the family and/or marriage unit, the man is to be the head of the woman and family. I think where people get tripped up is outside of those units: Does the same hold true in the Church? Is the man charged with heading, leading, and teaching the Church and women are to submit to that authority, or are women allowed to head, lead, and teach the Church and men are to submit to her authority? What, exactly, does this passage mean if women are allowed to usurp the authority of man in spiritual things, including to become the head of man?

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

Strong's definition of "usurp authority" is-

1) one who with his own hands kills another or himself

2) one who acts on his own authority, autocratic

3) an absolute master

4) to govern, exercise dominion over one

Applied to the verse in 1 Timothy above, my guess would be #4 fits the passage best. Although some women are happiest when they are the "absolute master" But with that in mind, it gives a better meaning to the passage as far as what it means to usurp authority over men.

I agree :applause:

However this never excuses the abuse of or the lack of fulfilling the role given to men nor does it excuse a women saying "get out of the way, your not doing it right, I can do it better, I'll do it myself"....even if it is true, it is not right.

And that is why Christ needs to be the head of every man and man needs to submit to His authority. So simple, yet so difficult.

Question... How would men encourage women to encourage men to be Godly leaders?

I don't think Men can except by pointing Women to the word. If they have already decided Mmen are not worth listening to, they wont listen anyway, however perhaps they will listen to Scripture. I think many Men forget they have a powerful tool in prayer when it appears easier to handle things in the flesh; a man's natural tendency.

This really needs to be something taught to a girl in her parents house by a father who is a good loving trustworthy leader and a mother that models a Godly. "vice-president position" in the marriage. Otherwise I pity the man who marries her.....unless he was raised in a home where the woman wore the pants.

This is what makes it difficult when men who are raised in a atmosphere of woman leadership marry a women raised in a atmosphere of male leadership. And when it is the other way around....somebody probably going to jail for spousal abuse!

I believe women who usurp a man's authority,(especially in the church) are trying to usurp God's authority as well. They are going against the natural order of things that God laid out in His Word. Lots of women who do such are merely craving attention (in my opinion). There isn't one scripture telling men to submit to a woman's authority.

Is there a way a woman can 'subjectively' without usurping authority, help, assist, prod , a man to be a submissive man to God? Or is that an oxymoronic statement?
