You must discern these things and figure out when it means obey or when it just means to know something or just believe someone. Example of when it is "just believe" James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. Here in John 3:36 some translations use believe and some use obey or disobey back then it was treated as similar words or interchangeable ESV John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
