THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BROKEN HEART!

Ok, let's get down to business, church business..

For many years I have heard nonsense being offered as wise counsel. Such is that of a BROKEN HEART..

Where did this come from..?

The term BROKEN HEART refers to the physical pain or discomfort in the Thoracic Cavity that is often associated with a loss or a tragic circumstance. Because of erroneous thinking, and warped religious philosophies, we tend to associate our emotional feelings with our physical heart, and therefore we think that the discomfort/pain with the emotional loss and we get "heartache" or "heartbroken."

Although some pain is psychological, there are also physical symptoms as well, but not from the heart, but the emotions.

In extreme circumstances there is an actual physical condition called Stress Cardiomyopathy, which can be triggered by a severe emotional incident. It has been known to feel like a heart-ache. Those who have experienced it, usually recover from it quickly.

Fascinating post, pc

So, what would you suggest people say? "I have the physical pain or discomfort in my Thoracic Cavity that is often associated with a loss or a tragic circumstance?" Sounds a little vague to me...could be indigestion.

Now, I'm not quite sure how the church and warped religious philosophies figure in to the origination of the term "brokenhearted". I would love to be enlightened....or not, if you have more pressing matters to attend. It would also be interesting to know the actual physiological changes that are associated with Stress Cardiomyopathy.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Ps34:18

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Ps147:3

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, Is61:1

Think what you will.... accuse as you do... call it what you want... but I hope that you are never, ever, around someone who loses a loved one. Their grief [broken heart] to you would be nonsense. How very sad.

The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. -Psalm 34:18

And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. -Genesis 6:6

Ya know... there is one good thing about your posts pc... Ya get people to search their bible as to what God says as opposed to what pc wants to pass for knowledge.

Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness:

and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

You're right, there is no literal "broken heart". I suppose there's no such thing as God writing on our hearts either. Could it be a metaphor? Hmm...pondering...

You have to have a heart to have a broken heart. Maybe that's why you sound like a robot in all your posts. Have you considered visiting the Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

I don't know that the term "broken heart" would be used as the cause of death in someone who suffered this syndrome. It's also known as apical ballooning syndrome. In any event, the OP with his statement, "Because of erroneous thinking, and warped religious philosophies, we tend to associate our emotional feelings with our physical heart", is himself warped in his thinking that it is erroneous to think our emotional feelings are related with our heart, when our heart can and does indeed respond to emotional trauma secondary to the reaction of our body's response to that emotional trauma.

Our bodies, especially women, respond to the stressors of life, emotional or physical. That's just the way it is. The body is designed this way. And it affects our physical well being to include the heart. When one experiences a traumatic emotional stress, epinephrine is released in such a quantity that it overwhelms the heart. The left ventricle which is the main pumping chamber in the heart is squeezed and it doesn't contract and pump blood effectively. The interesting thing about this is that the shape of the left ventricle actually changes during this process. So yes, there is a relation between the heart and the emotional trauma that can induce the heart to react. And in the cases where it becomes fatal, I would say yes, that person died of a broken heart. It wasn't the emotions that caused death, but the hearts response to the body's reaction.
