She Divorced me Because I enrolled into Law School: Really?

After years of being an evangelist/pastor, I was led to take my calling to another level. I sat and passed the LSAT and was accepted to study law by one of the law schools in Florida.

My then spouse was initially supportive and agreed to move. We agreed that I go first while she makes final plans to join me out there later in 2009.

Next thing I knew, she filed for divorce claiming that I have "backslidden" from my christian faith and ministry call by attempting to be a lawyer. She believes lawyers are evil and that a pastor should never be a lawyer. I failed to convince her otherwise. This was a new philosophy she never shared before ever I sat for LSAT - to think she was the one who prayed with me and got "confirmation" that God wills it.

I marvel at how ignorance still rule the minds of certain :christians" in a modern world.

Issue for Discussion: Can a pastor double as a lawyer and still be a true man of God?

My opinion: Of course! Just because you are a lawyer does not automatically mean you are a mean evil person who tries to get wife beaters and kid killers free. I used those extremes on purpose. God knows the court systems and legal systems NEED Christian lawyers! So God be with you my friend and bless your career choices.

Sometimes education is scary to folks. A guy I was seeing gave me an ultimatum last year: drop out of college or drop him. I am still working on that doctorate. He was so threatened by my learning more. He also did not like the time I invest in my studies. I am almost done with the doctorate and he suddenly is wanting to reestablish communication. He says he is now at piece with my studies. Interesting timing.

I think based on the way I look at the situation, there is a mismatch of direction between the husband and the wife that could have been very crucial at a certain point in time that the two of them were not able to discern that their marital relationships will be eventually ruined. Although I am single but I believe that there was something missing. It could have been a mutual decision of both which direction that they can go together as husband and wife if they really mean to live together until death do as part. At times perhaps someone should compromise in order to save their marriage. I feel sad about this anyway. But life must move on and try to be optimistic in God's perspective. God remains to be the SAVIOR in all our circumstances.

I know many they are doing both in a perfect way! As lawyers they handle with civil law and avoid to accept issues concerning the criminal law, if they are not sure that their client is innocent!

As they are familiar with rhetoric, they may develop true and/or as well false arguments in order to defend their clients.

Using false arguments they will come in contrast with their faith, and that is dangerous.

If that is really the only reason for the divorce, i assume this an early decision of her, based more on her feelings. I could not deny that women own some of the, so called 6th sense, which have to do with the their husbands attitudes, but patience is also a divine exhortation.

I rather believe that there are other reasons, not as plausible to be used!

MyBoaz2011,

I highly recommend the short but thoughtful book . . . The Lawyer's Calling: Christian Faith and Legal Practice by Joseph G. Allegretti

I am actually finishing up my second year in law school at Liberty School of Law which is one of the few Christian law schools in the U.S. Like in any law school there is a strong focus on learning to think like a lawyer and studying the reasoning of the law but as a Christian institution there is an even greater focus on being an ambassador of Christ.

In today's culture a lot of people identify themselves by what they do -- I'm a lawyer, I'm a doctor, I'm a scientist that's who I am. Each profession carries with it certain connotations and additional meanings which have been embedded by a multitude of things including the media. For lawyers, the cultural has predominately viewed them has "hired guns" who only care about winning no matter the cost.

We tend to make the inference that all lawyers are A (bad, greedy, etc.) therefore if you are a lawyer or want to be one then you must be A (bad, greedy, etc.) too.

As Christians our identity is in Christ, it is who we are. If I am a true Christian and my identity is in Christ then that worldview, that belief system will naturally influence every other area in my life -- including my profession.

There is a subtle yet vast difference between a lawyer who is a Christian and a Christian who is a lawyer. We are called to not to conform but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds -- meaning in part that we cannot simply leave our faith on the altar on Sunday and go into work on Monday and conform to the world's standards.
