A Wrong Sense Of Entitlement...

"We love as though we know not better,

It claims more worthy selves and gentler aims and still this doom is ours,

We sought late wonderings and soft light,

Dim and then the first embrace,

The touch as if those hands were all the world

-- for such their beauty seemed: he carried gods with him,

And these loves, so celebrated, sung, so painted, danced, idolatrized...

These scenes are but tantrums of our genes

Which we their slaves embellish

-- strung like puppets, till they break their strings

And all that's left are our own imaginings. "-- Kezin Speirs

I copied these verses word-for word off a billboard of a public transit bus when I was in Toronto in July. My first impression at the time was that the author was sincere yet pessimistic. Not any more. After a few hard lessons, I'm not so sure. What I've discovered is that love is definitely not for the weak as a kind of oasis vacation spot. Somehow, even Christians have acquired a high degree of entitlement, believing that as God's children we have the right to whatever our heart wants, only to discover later it doesn't always work that way.

If relationships are made in heaven and I believe they are, we need to proceed with great caution because the Scriptures tell us that the heart is sometimes deceitful and deceitful above all things. That sounds so severe doesn't it? We think we know what's best for us, yet do we? The way of salvation was never intended to be a license for irresponsible decisionmaking... as if to say, "Here God, come and catch me!" as we jump off the cliff waiting for Him to rescue us. Even good relationships are as fragile as they are beautiful as they are rare, so this means we need to proceed with great caution rather than lose our head in the euphoria of the moment.
