What are your opinions of Valentines Day? Do you think it is sweet, corny, sad, lonely, upsetting, disappointing, etc.? Do you have any favorite memories of past Valentines Days?
I think that Valentines Day is a sweet tradition, but too much emphasis is put on giving gifts and not enough emphasis is put on caring for the special people in your life. In recent years, I have actually grown sadly cynical of Valentines Day. That probably has something to do with the fact that I'm still single when I don't want to be...so I just avoid the red and pink decorations in the stores.
My favorite Valentines memory is from when I was about 9 or 10. My dad always got each of "his girls" something small, like a little box of candy. That year, though, he really splurged and got us all a BIG box of candy! It was fancy, heart-shaped, had a fake rose on top, and it was SO pretty! But it was totally the thought that mattered. He wanted to show us how big his love was, so he bought us a big box of candy. We only had a couple more Valentines Days with him after that...I really treasure every memory of him!
My Dad's birthday was valentine's day, so I have always associated the holiday with that. I have given out valentines for years to family and friends, and some of the candy is good. Being single and/or without a date on valentimes day bothers me not at all. I think the holiday hype does put a lot of pressure on people, especially couples.
I think it's a fun tradition. You can go all out with it or just do a little, depending on what you want, but it's still fun. I received a Valentine ecard from someone I've been in touch with from this site and it was so sweet! Also, I'm leading a single's ministry at my church and we are going to go out to lunch Sunday after church to celebrate together as friends! No matter if you're single or in a relationship of some sorts, it's still a fun tradition to reach out to the people who are important to you - whether they be friends or significant others - and show them that you care.
Saint Valentine's Day (shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love for one another.
The holiday is named after one or more early Christian people named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD.
It is a day on which people expresses their love for each other by presenting flowers, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").
The holiday first became associated with people showing they love someone in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the (European History in the 11, 12, and 13th
Century).
Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves.
Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.
HERE IS A THOUGHT: WE ALSO SHOULD REMEMBER, WHO WE LOVE MORE THAN ANYONE OR ANYTHING AND THAT IS NONE OTHER THAN JESUS CHRIST,
FOR HEDIED ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS, THAT IS "TRUEL LOVE".
SO, DONT JUST THINK ABOUT THE ONES WE LOVE HERE ON EARTH, BUT ALSO REMEMBER THIS IS ALSO ANOTHER DAY TO SAY " LORD WE LOVE YOU"
WE SHOULD TELL GOD WE LOVE HIM EVERYDAY FOR LIKE I SAID, HE DIED ON THE CROSS FOR US.
JOHN 15:9-17
JOHN (9) As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. (10) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide (to continue) in my
love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
(11) These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
(12)This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
(13) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
(14) Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
(15) (Henceforth = from this time on) I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth (does): but I have called you friends; for all
things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
(16) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ( any) ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
(17) These things I command you, that ye love one another.
I've never really had a fantastic Valentine's Day experience with someone special, but I don't think it's a bad "holiday." If you can avoid the negativity surrounding it (stores jacking up prices on popular items around that time, people only celebrating their love on one day a a year, etc.), it can be very nice. "Quaint" is the word that sticks out in my mind.
My favorite Valentine's Day memory also involves my father. When I was young, he used to bring flowers to my mother. He would bring me a rose and leave it in my room early in the morning, so that I would have a sweet surprise to wake up to.
This habit sadly died a long time ago, but I would really like my future husband to do sweet things like that for our daughter(s), should we have one (any).
