The SIGN seeking approach. IT IS OK to ask God for a sign?

My answer is NO! Yes. God can speak through signs and wonders. Yes, lots were sometimes used to make decisions in ancient times. But we now have a whole Bible to guide us. People who ask God for signs completely misunderstand His character. Often they are just playing games with God and ignoring the OBVIOUS. Heres what Jesus said when people demanded a sign from Him:

Matthew 12:39-40 But he answered and said unto them, an evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (KJV)

Jesus was responding to the religious leaders demand for a sign. While this is a little different from seeking Gods will, the principle remains: sign seeking is not the way to know the heart of God.

Heres an examples from the experience of Kuya Kevin during counselling. He was sitting beside a student on a bus. They began talking, and she was soon sharing deeply personal information with him. She was having an affair with an older married man. He warned her about the long-term consequences of wasting her youth on a dead end relationship. She told him she would pray to God and ask Him to give her a sign.

Do you see the problem here? First and foremost, God was serious when He made that do not commit adultery commandment (Exodus 20:14). That was already enough information to guide her. Then a really white guy from halfway across the world (Kuya Kevin) just happens to board her bus and sit right next to her. What else did she want God to do?

THE BIBLE, WISE CHRISTIAN COUNSEL, AND COMMON SENSE ARE USUALLY ALL YOU NEED TO DISCERN GODS WILL.

A sign or a feeling, It is sad that those who choose to go on a sign or more so a feeling get led to destruction.

My ex felt it was Gods will to divorce me even though Gods word says other wise.

I once was talking to a woman from a singles meeting at a church I used to attend. She was telling me about her friend living with a guy and this woman was certain it was Gods will.

You see with signs and feelings we can make anything into Gods will.

The wicked generation is wicked for signs because they seek to place Gods approval on their wicked actions. It really is the same lie from the beginniing. You can be like gods determining what is good and what is evil.

Asking generally to all. Who really is God in your life?

I think even though we have the whole Bible there are times when we are not sure on how to proceed in a certain area of our lives. A good example is in who we date/marry. The bible says we are to guard our hearts in dating especially with someone we really like this can be hard. We all want to stay in God's perfect will for our lives so asking him for a sign it not a bad thing.

With that what we ask a sign for should line up with the word.

People who tell me God told them to do something outside of the word I pray for. They have a "special" relationship with God and have bibles with extra verses. You cannot tell them anything just love them and pray for them!

Following the recommendation from @IamGodsPrinces and Letthismind2, I see many instances in the Holy Scriptures where men had asked for sign to know where God leads.... But who are these men? These in bible are men unregenerate. These are men unsaved. These are men who lived under the old. These are men who walked the earth before the coming of the Holy Spirit.

At the advent of the HOLY SPIRIT and JESUS, God expected the man with the new nature to walk by HIS SPIRIT. HIS WORD AND FAITH. These are the feelers by which we reach to God. We pray in faith asking. We believe in Hope of Receiving. We hang on the veracity of his word knowing it will not fail.

A man given to signs is a man given to guesswork. It is not infallible. Where signs might doggedly win you a desire, it is not guaranteed to live you peaceful! But God's word and faith and spirit leaves you in a peaceful mode!

The bad part about asking for a sign, sometimes you wonder who is answering!

I was just dealing with this with this with my feincee.

We are waiting and trusting God for her visa so we can become married. We have a proven relationship that works and we love eachother dearly. We are in Gods will concerning being equally yoked together in faith.

She might have interpeted as a sign from God that if the visa was rejected that ment God dissaproves of our relationship.

So I ask her what if God desire us to wait and continue to trust Him. What if the disaproval of the visa is to test our commitment?

A sign can be interpeted and usually does not according to faith but by our own emotional weakness or desire.

Their were two individuals who built a house. One upon sand and one upon the rock. When the storms came the one built upon the rock stood strong. The one built on the sand fell and great was its destruction.

So what do we build our house upon faith or feelings?
