Has any one else here meet someone they start to connect with only to take a joke too far?

I can't be the only GUY to do this!

Its a common defense mechanism that I have succumbed to before.

She shared some personal things because I could tell she trusted me, only to get careless. I wanted to keep a light tone starting out

I shared some of my past w/ alcoholism & recovery, making light of a heavy topic. Essentially I was making fun of the "old ME".

Then Click! OFFLINE! No more responses, not even a "that's not funny".

Should I offer an apology, giving it one last shot? Or let it be?

I think a nice apology sent by way of a message (rather than attempting an IM apology) would be appropriate in this case. That way she has a chance to respond if she wishes, and if she doesn't respond, you at least know that you tried.

As a side note...are you sure that she intentionally went offline to cut you off? I'm just thinking about the times when I've been in the middle of a conversation (on here, other sites, facebook, etc.) and my internet connection completely died. There was nothing I could do, and no way to explain my sudden and unintentional disappearance.

HuuuRah!

I can only Imagine the story you might have related.

A "Military Mind" is often not quite as "Sensitive" as a Civilian's Mind.
