Attraction vs. Compatibility
Posted : 5 Oct, 2012 10:01 AM

While researching the much-vaunted concept of compatibility in relationships, I came across the following article in oprah.com and wanted to share with all of us:

Which component in a romantic relationship is more important: attraction or compatibility? While many would argue in favor of compatibility, Rabbi Shmuley says it is attraction that is the lifeblood of a healthy, long-lasting and loving relationship. He talks about the true meaning of attraction and why it is at the heart of every great romantic partnership.

In today's society, Rabbi Shmuley says attraction is misunderstood and has been reduced to mean physical attraction, which is ultimately a fleeting force based on novelty. But real attraction, he argues, is much more. "Attraction is the inexplicable, mysterious, magnetic pull of polar oppositesof the feminine to the masculine, the masculine to the feminine," he says.

When a man is attracted to a woman, Rabbi Shmuley says there are five things that should constitute his attraction: Her scent, sound, mind, heart and, finally, her body. Compatibility takes precedence over attraction when these five senses are not fully explored and engaged, he says. "We've so reduced attraction to something so monolithic that it's lost its power, so we've had to fall back on compatibility," he says.

Attraction may create or lead to compatibility, but compatibility alone is not enough to keep a man and woman together for the long haul, Rabbi Shmuley says. Compatibility means having things in commonit means friendship, he says, and couples who embark on a lifelong commitment to one another based solely on the merits of friendship are bound to fail. "The insistence on compatibility as opposed to attraction is what's making relationships so weak these days," Rabbi Shmuley says. "They are so easily torn asunder because the force that binds them is actually a weak one."

Today's Shmuleyism

"In a relationship, common goals are much more important than a common origin. Where you are going to is much more important than where you are coming from."

Completely off topic, but your post made me think of a video I watched. Students at the University of WIsonsin were asked about President Obama not being able to use the teleprompter in the debate. The answers were hilarious yet downright sad IMO. One guy asked how we could expect Obama to memorize an hour and a half debate. Most people said they thought it wasn't right that he didn't get to use a teleprompter. One guy thought the teleprompter was the debate moderator. I was just shocked at some of these responses. This is relevant only in that the OP seems to be so out of touch with the realities of Christianity, just as these college students were out of touch with reality in the video. I know that may come off as some sort of personal attack, but it's just my honest observation. Okay, I'm done rambling. Great posts btw brother

I'd never seen that video that you posted on Oprah. That was really disgusting. I was unaware of some of the things that she is now promoting. It's truly sad that Christians are so unaware of the content of their own Bibles that they could be persuaded by such completely anti-Christian concepts.

She falls under the context of Hebrews 6 having been raised in the Baptist church and obviously falling away from the true gospel.

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

See See....you can lose salvation!

Yea it's sad what her views are. Up until this point, I'd have never heard a professing Christian support her views on Christianity.

With guests on the show such at Deepak Chopra

and the homosexual celebrity blogger Perez Hilton(not going to post that video...)

Anyway, they all show a complete lack of understanding of biblical truth.

TBK, GraceU, etc.,

Your fallacious arguments can be classified as "alleged certainty" for of reasoning.

A little education may help you better discuss more intelligently instaed of parochially:

Description: Asserting a conclusion without evidence or premises, through a statement that makes the conclusion appear certain, when in fact, it is not.

Logical Form:

Everybody knows that X is true.

Therefore X is true.

Example #1:

People everywhere recognize the need to help the starving children of the world.

Explanation: Actually, people everywhere dont recognize this. This may seem like common sense to those who make the claim, and to many who hear the claim, but there are many people on this earth who do not share that view, and need to be convinced first.

Example #2:

Everyone knows that without religion, we all would be like lost sheep.

Explanation: Everyone does not know that. Sometimes, without stepping outside your own social sphere, it might seem like what you might accept as universal truths are simply truths within your own social sphere. Dont assume universal truths.

Exception: Facts that would seem foolish not to assume, can be assumed -- but one should be prepared to support the assumption, no matter how certain one may be.

We all know that without water we cannot survive.

Tip: Replace the word certain in your life with extremely probable.

Variation: The appeal to common sense is asserting that your conclusion or facts are just common sense, yet sense is anything but common. We have a tendency to think that many of our beliefs and opinions are common sense when in fact they are not. We must argue as to why we believe something is common sense, rather than just asserting that it is.

Most of your assertions then are simply allegations of "scriptural" certainty - which is nothing but your personal biblical notions.

Likewise, a little knowledge may help you better discuss things more wisely instead of vainly.

Isa. 5

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:

19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

and....

Romans 1

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

You conservative and fundamental crowd mistakenly think that God is Christian and that the Bible is a magic wand to be waved on the face of your perceived adversaries.

God is not a Christian. The Bible print is not a talisman. Don't just wave the word and spew out Bible verses, live it - and let's see the indwelling word showing forth graciously to so-called unbelievers.

Actually, there are no "unbelievers" out there, because everyone believes in something. If I am an unbeliever, can any of these judgmental Christians here convince me to change camp? Absolutely Not!!

So, conservatives, change your ways and open up your minds to reasonably hear the other side out before you zing out scriptures.

This is typical of your responses thus far. You make a claim but fail prove it. You attack people, label them and so on as you see fit but fail to show that what you say has any merit whatsoever. Further, you make presumptions against the word of God itself but fail to show any Biblical support for your theories.

So, let me repeat:

"You are long on verbatim, rhetoric, and ad-hominem and short on Biblical support. If you wish to engage me in dialogue, intelligent or otherwise, do so with the Word of God itself. Your opinions, if they disagree with the Word, are totally worthless to me.

You have done nothing to refute what I or any other member has said to you. Your claims thus far have had no Biblical support. "

Therefore, I consider this discussion to be closed at this point.
