a day without words

For some things there are no words. As a woman who loves words, this is tragic at first thought. Surely, I must be able to pick up the phone and explain to someone exactly how I feel; surely, the recipient of my words must have the perfect words to speak back to me. Surely, there must be words that can set my world back in order again and my heart into rhythm again.

At second thought, I let some wisdom penetrate. If words were adequate for all things, Christ would not have died; He would not have spent hours on the cross bleeding out His very life for us. If words were adequate, true repentance would be unnecessary; we could simply scrawl words of apology on a Hallmark card and call it a day. If words were adequate, we wouldnt need two hands. We wouldnt have feet. God wouldnt have given us the gift of sex.

Often, we make words into things they are not.

What would a day without words look like for you? How would you communicate without words? How would you show Christs love without words? Turn off your phone. Send no emails. Dont spend the hour gabbing over coffee with your friend...

How would you spend a wordless day?

Thanks for the responses (and the welcome backs) thus far, everybody =)

@River: No, I haven't seen it. And I don't know that a day of silence could even work for me! Ha! I love to write and talk and it's sounds like torture to forgo those things, even for just 24 hours!! I was just in a place of frustration over the inadequacy of words and was contemplating why words aren't always enough and then came to the conclusion that they weren't mean to be and that there are so many other ways to communicate -- ways that I neglect because I'm too busy either talking or writing!!

@Butterfly: "I've found that children really enjoy watching me draw simple pictures that they can try to copy." That is SO true =) Young children also really get a bang out of having you trace their hands or you letting them trace yours, and then then drawing rings or tattoos or whatever on the hands. We should never underestimate the power of paper and crayons. No words needed =)

There are so many acts of service and worship that don't require words! I think that if I did actually go a full day without talking and just totally immersing myself in serving the Lord that I'd discover just how much I overuse words.

Pixy,

I think writing is an excellent way of communication laying out your heart before the Lord. I journal almost every day. but your right, words arent enough and it sounds like God is doing something deep within your heart...which doesnt always feel good.

Im a pretty quiet person so, the talking portion wouldnt be that bad but the writing...i dunno :)

Good thing God knows our hearts huh? The words we express in words or on paper, He knows whats really going on...Thank God SOMEONE does, haha.

glad your back ;)

YES, I am so thankful that God knows my heart. One of my favourite verses is in Romans 8(?) where it talks about how the Spirit intercedes for us with groans that our words can't express. I have cried all over that page and it's all torn and nasty now! Haha! It's such a great reminder, though, that we don't have to come up with words for God to understand us!

And thanks for the welcome back. You're sweet =)

@ pixy~~

Love that verse as well! Went to my pastor one time and told him I couldn't find words to pray for being so distraught and he reminded me that the Spirit would intercede for me. I felt so much comfort from that. Makes me wonder how I can be quiet with a good friend and just enjoy the companionship without words, but think I must speak constantly when trying to commune with God! Am so grateful that he knows my heart as well!

Welcome back Pixy!

No words for a whole day?

No talking, texting or emailing. That would be hard for me. My life is so busy. I have to e-mail talk and text for my work. Some times I do all three at once.

Well I like doing renos and have one on the go and one around the end of the December. That can keep you busy for hours with no talking if you work alone. But I have kids and am with them every day so would have to talk some time.
