So you think you know who you are talking to is really who they say they are.....

On line dating is relatively new to me, but I do know that there are those who pose to be one thing and are not.

Welcome to scammer school 101.

1) yes they will ask you for money on the pretense of

a) being stuck in a foreign country because....robbed, can't cash a check, the ATM ate their card....you get the picture.

b) they can't a checking account and want you to share your banking info to deposit money into OR they want you to open a new account in your name to deposit money into (money laundering)

c) they are working on a project and ran out of funds to finish it, but once they do it will sell for lots of money

2) they will try to draw you into their job or organization

a) a job is starting but can't get back in time to get their mail, will you allow their mail to be delivered there.

b) have you receive packages that need to be signed for and then reshipped out to another location (often this is stolen credit card bought items you are sending along)

c) use your address or name to sit up dummy credit card accounts or charge items and have it sent to you for billing purposes

So those are a few things that I know they will try to work on you.

Some can speak very good English, but it might be slightly off.

They don't like to answer questions that require too much thought, such as tell me about the place you live at. If it is a cut and paste from the internet most likely it is someone who has never been there. That or they have poor skills in communication.

They no longer can provide current photos, for example they tell you they are traveling, but no photos of them in that place.

Guys don't assume the woman you are talking to is actually a woman. Most of these scammers will pose as both men and women to get whatever they are after.

I will post more as I am still learning more and more. Please feel free to jump in with things you may have experieced and what ideas you may have on this. :purpleangel:

We are fighting the good fight of faith.....:boxing:

My all-time favorites are the marriage proposals in the first message. Yes, that's happened quite a few times on this site and other sites. They usually go something like this:

"Dearest one, I found you to be so beautiful that I fell in love with you immediately. Will you do me the honor of marrying me? I look forward to you arriving in (insert name of foreign country) to join me in my work here."

Um......yeah. Right.

lets not forget the scammers that are people who have been booted from the site that come back with simple profiles and no pictures to harrass people!

In my case I had a smooth talker who I thought lived only 60 miles from me. Then the red flags went up.

He is now posted on romancescam.com to warn others about him. When I did that, I met one of his victims. :excited:

I notice that they don't change their m.o. nor the way they talk. Same grammar mistakes. They have scripts they can follow.

Yes profiles without pictures and little info could be a sign of a scammer returning.

I know when I first arrived here I couldn't post a picture though and had to send it in to be posted for me. Second I am a little nervous about posting pictures and my profile giving information, because they like to left them and use them for they own.

Something I've found a few times is this: The profile states that the person has a degree level education but the spelling and grammar in the message/email suggests otherwise.

This could just be me nit-picking, but you would assume that someone educated to that level would have a higher standard of written english.

God bless

Yes you would think that a teacher would know how to write and have good grammar.

So what should we do when we come up against someone we know is a scam artist?

We can report it to sites to warn others about this person.

We need to pray for this person and countries that do nothing to stop these crimes.

We need to have the government where we live make laws to protect their citizens.

We need to educate ourselves of how they operate.

Those businesses that we send money through should have better ways of protecting and tracking the money that is sent for those who do not know better.

Once the person has been discovered, cut off all communications and do not accuse them of it or tell them how you know.

Ive chosen not to put my pictures online, but only because someone lifted mine once years ago and used them in an act of vengence because I said that unrepentant homosexuals were going to H*ll in a chatroom. This was when I was first online on AOL. It took me years to get them all removed and I had to use lawyers and even the police to do it. If God lets me find the one He has chosen for me, I would be more than happy to send her pictures of myself, my family. Until that time, not uploading pictures is a hard and fast rule of mine. I do not even have pictures on my facebook page because of what happened.

What about people who send out copy and paste messages.

They probably send it to several people at one. lol

I can tell a message that is not Original so they need not send it to me. lol Most get banned after a couple days. lol
