Love versus lust - what are the differences?

I think in our cultural the biblical meaning of love has been lost and has been replaced with the word lust. We should not live in fear, but just be aware that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion ready to devour us.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

We all know this, but did you ever think about this..........

Lust is inpatient, lust is not kind, lust envies, lust boast, lust is selfish. Lust dishonors others, lust is self-seeking, lust is easily angered, lust is selfish. Lust delights in evil, and does not rejoice with the truth. Lust harms, lust lies to get what it wants, lust is distrustful, lust leaves us hopeless, lust destroys hearts.

Love and lust are very different. Love is patient. Lust requires immediate satisfaction. Love respects peoples boundaries. Lust does not. Love is kind. Lust is harsh. Love brings peace and contentment and lust brings dissatisfaction and discontentment. Love does not demand its own way; lust does. You can read about characteristics of real love. Lust may feel like love at first but when physically expressed it results in self-disgust and hatred of the other person. If you just cant wait, what you feel is not true love.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what you think the difference is between love and lust. God Bless!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said impatient. I would say for that not only lust but loneliness cause me to be impatient and selfish and try to short cut the process.

Very interesting. And quite accurate. I can think of a couple girls who need to read this because the relationships they are in tend to lean more to the "lust" side than the "love" side.

Since I am a bored guy, who has nothing better to do than tease women I am going to have to disagee. a schoolboy crush is different. It is borderline lust but I think harmless,

Also, lust could br when you see a manor woman and say to yourself, " wow that is someone for me."

I believe there are several types of lust. The kind you spoke on is bad.

However, lust as in harmless crushes is ok.

you see it is like anger, it is how you do it.

see my point sister.

Also, I think lust is based on fear and selfishness, where love is selfless and casts out fear.

Which is no easy task, but it is right. Rich Mullins once said at one of his concerts that "If it didn't hurt it wasn't love."

Actually, the verses prior to this describe lust:

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
