What do you think causes a man and a woman to fall in and out of love?

In other words, what is it about a certain man, a certain woman ... what do they do differently from some other man and woman that causes that certain man or woman to fall in love with them?

A pondering from my barefoot romantic heart to yours?

Perceptions, which influence emotions.

I agree with live and Two. Perceptions are reality. They are real to the perceiver.

For example, I have said things to people with no ill-intent at all but because they perceived as though I did, it hurt their feelings. I believe they perceived me as being selfish.

If one in the relationship, feels as though the other is being perpetually selfish, defences will go up and, eventually, there goes the love. :(

I think that's where it's important to feel as though you know your loved one's heart; to know whether or not they are a good person, even deep down. Then when they say something that might hurt your feelings at first, you know deep down they aren't the type of person that would want to do that. Then, personally, I consider the thought that I might have perceived them wrong.

It takes a while to develope the trust that comes along with that though. To trust someone enough to know they wouldn't want to hurt your feelings, even if they're lashing out from pain or anger they're feeling.

Just my two cents. :)

falling OUT of love has to do with unresolved conflict and words used to hurt each other.

you cant take words back.

Usually people fall out of love, because they have no concept of what love really is, or simply lack the skills needed to have a healthy relationship. Many people are so hurting on the inside, they can't have a healthy relationship, or they are simply too selfish. Society today is all about "What can you do for ME, What makes ME happy, I want, I need, I feel..." Sound familiar?

Most people will never find true happiness, peace or love, because they are all looking for love in the wrong place. They are looking to people to fill a need that is really a spiritual need for God in their lives. Deep at the core of our being we are all relational creatures. We were created and designed that way so that we could have a deep, mutually loving relationship with Jesus. We all have that empty void in us because its the part of us that is meant to be filled with the love of Christ.

Then we try to fill it with other things...drugs, money, sex, etc...and when that doesn't work, we look to other PEOPLE to meet ALL OUR NEEDS in us, and they never can. Then we get selfish, angry, bitter, bored, etc. So then we think the grass is greener on the other side, and we need to "find someone else" to "make us happy".

Instead of looking at a potential match or marriage partner through the eyes of "what can this person do for me, give me, be to me?" look instead at what you can do FOR THEM...take the selfishness out of the equation and love them like Jesus would.

If you cannot be a happy, whole, completely fulfilled person while you are single, you will never have it when you are in a relationship with another human being. People can never give us what Jesus can...so we need to stop being so disappointed in our relationships and love the other person the way Christ would...unselfishly.

Jewels133,

That was awesome!

So,

If Christ dwells within us, is it His Spirit that would fall in and out of love with anyone? Is that even possible?

I'd say its more possible to take our eyes off Christ within a relationship, begin to walk in our flesh more and more, and in doing so, become more and more selfish until decay begins to set in and corrupt our relationships - a relationship that should have been all about Christ between 2 people from the very beginning.

When we take our eyes off Christ within any relationship, like Peter, we will have instantly fallen into the sea around us even if we don't realize it right away......King David had sank by the time he did what he did with Bathsheba.

To fall in... there is the need then meet someone they want to have a relationship with, fall in love with.

To fall out...because one or both only have conditional love.

Depends on your definition of love. The actual feeling emotion usually does wear off within a year or so - at that point many people call it a day and go in search of another for their next 'fix' of this emotion (I put in on par with drug use). What you're left with is a partner, and possibly children, and the choice: do I commit the rest of my days to them because they're worth it?

Search out the lyrics for Don Francisco's "love is not a feeling" for my take on it.
