I am a single dad with 2 children. My little girl is 8 years old and is letting her hair grow real long so she can donate it to the locks of love foundation. I'm pretty good with pony tails and such, but am having trouble with braiding it. We both get frustrated after a few minutes. My barber doesn't know how to do it and really don't want to spend a fortune at the beauty parlor every time she wants her hair braided. Is there like a trick to it? I know this is probably a far fetched question and pretty embarrasing for a guy, but maybe someone can suggest a website or something.

Thanks

Not ...just smiling...I have an 8yo daughter, she learned to braid on her pony's mane. It's good practice. Do you know the basics? If not, I would google 'three strand flat braid'...that's the easiest place to start and you can look at some diagrams. If you want to know how to do it well, then that takes more practice and less fidgiting. :-)

Just kidding Amazed!

That took a lot of guts I'm sure.:rocknroll:

When I was showing my horses I'd have to braid their manes sometimes. It's simple once you get the hang of it:

Divide the hair into 3 even sections. (make sure you comb the knots out first) Cross the left section over the middle section. (The left section is now the middle section.) Pull tight (but not tight enough to bring tears!) Cross the right section over the midle section. Pull tight. Continue until you reach the end or your little girl can't take it anymore and secure with a rubber band or pony tail holder. Believe it or not, my horses always loved it but it was a pain to take loose because horse hair is so coarse.

Good instruction, Edw. I'll add that if you're having trouble with keeping the three divisions separate, you might put a ponytail holder or barrett on the end of each to help keep them separated while you braid for just a little while til you get the hang of it. http://www.ehow.com/video_4408427_do-basic-hair-braid.html

Yeah, if you google or better than that youtube it. They have all kinds of tutorials about hair. It will probably come up with ppl doing black folk hair, but its the same process.

Edw was right in his break down, youtube will give you a visual.

God bless your precious daughter and you! :applause:

I was just going to add You Tube as a visual aid, Babygirl covered that. :)

Happy braiding memories...I do my grand-girls hair, now.

I was going to suggest YouTube also. It will give you a visual to follow and you can replay it as many times as you need to. Do you have someting to practice on? It will have to be close to your girl's hair consistency so you can get the hang of it.

Braiding is a good way to keep hair in place and have it look nice. There are different kinds of braids, such as flat and french, and of course you can also do multiple strands. It does take practice, but the good news is it does not take too much practice. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!
