If your husband asked that you not cut your hair short, what would your response be? He wouldn't be trying to force you but just saying that he prefers long hair on his wife.

Second question: What would be the most respectful way to bring up the topic?

I would comply =) But then, I've pretty much always had fairly long hair anyway. There were 2 or 3 years where I kept it around shoulder length, but it typically falls several inches past my shoulders. And really, it looks better long, I think. I feel more feminine and attractive when it's long. Since it's curly, it can get pretty psycho if it's too short... I'm not really going for the Shirley Temple look, even though she was cute as a button.

How to bring it up... hmmm... Well, I would bring it up early on, I guess. If she already has long hair, compliment her on it... tell her that it frames her face beautifully and stuff like that. If it's too short for your liking, then you could ask her if she's ever had it longer and how she liked it. Those would be conversation starters, of course. From there, you could eventually explain your preference.

Depends on how long he wants it. I have fairly curly, thin, fragile, dry hair, and it doesn't look good at ALL if it gets more than a couple inches below my shoulders. If that's as long as he wants it, fine. If he wants it down to my waist or longer, he'd better just get used to the idea that MY hair simply won't grow that long. I've tried. It breaks off before it gets there, and it looks horrible.

It also depends on what he means by "don't cut it short"...does he mean, no "boy" cuts or "pixie" cuts? I tend to wear my hair short-ish, but I've found over the years that there are a lot of short-ish cuts that leave some length yet also look stylish and healthy.

Another thing would be his motives. If he just simply loves the way my hair looks when it is longer, sure, I'd let it grow as long as will and still look healthy. If he loves to touch my hair and likes some length to it because of that, then we could probably come up with a hair length that is mutually pleasing to both of us.

If he thinks that he can control me by telling how I may and may not wear my hair, he has another think coming. If he thinks it's wrong for women to cut their hair, I have a problem with that, and we are probably going to be disagreeing in a lot of other areas too.

Did that answer your question at all?

Oh, how to bring it up...forgot that part! If he doesn't like my newest haircut, he should NOT tell me that! Instead, wait until it grows out a bit, then say something like "Your hair really looks nice when it's long like that...have you ever thought about letting it grow even longer?" That's a good way to start a conversation about my hair, and hopefully wouldn't leave me feeling like my last haircut was a disaster. At that point, he could mention that he loves longer hair. If I care about him, I'll probably do what I can to please him. After all, I DO want him to find me attractive.

If a guy has very specific thoughts about how his wife's hair should be worn, he needs to be honest about that early in the dating relationship. Like I mentioned in my first post, if he's trying to control me or feels like cutting my hair is wrong, I need to know that because we'll likely strongly disagree on some other things as well...things that could lead to the end of the relationship.

How long is long? I would be willing to compromise, but only to a certain length (pun intended!)

When to bring it up? Probably when you are seriously a couple and seriously heading towards marriage. Expectations like that should be made clear.

For me shoulder length would be ideal. If it's shorter than that, it's too short. I just don't find short hair attractive on a woman. (No offense intended for anyone reading this.)

Thanks all.

maybe you could say "will you grow your hair long FOR ME?"

then if you absolutely dont like it, you can cut it.

I would have no problem keeping my hair long. Like Pixy, I have the type of curly hair that looks not so good, when it's short. And it's not easy to keep it straight, especially in humid weather.

On the flip side, if a man wanted me to cut my hair short, I would just let him see my 7th grade picture, when I did have short hair.

As for suggesting how to bring it up, Pixy, Piano, and I think BG all have good ideas.

I dunno - I've had mid-back length hair forever until this past year when I cut it for locks for love. And I'm liking the shorter do. Easier upkeep and no headaches for constantly wearing it in a ponytail. If my man liked it longer, maybe I would let it grow and then donate it again to do the short do again.

and yep, I like the other's comments on bringing it up - commenting how it looks great/cooler/nice, but love it when it's long/short/straight/curly. And not to be making those comments ALL THE TIME, which would be totally annoying. I'd say once a year at the least, perhaps whenever a haircut is due. Maybe something like - "a lady from work just got this funky haircut and I bet it would look great on you."
