How old is too old to start a family?

I'm just curious. I've seen a lot of profiles of women who are 38+ and they have no kids and want to start a family. To me, that seems a little late in life to want to have kids. I mean, by the time your kids leave for college it's time to retire.

I'm not being mean... I'm sincerely curious. I love my kids dearly, but I personally wouldn't want to try and start all over again. Maybe if I didn't have any I would feel differently, but there seem to be a lot of women who already have kids, are pushing 40, and also want to have more. I might just be behind the times. Again, I'm not trying to be a jerk and if this post seems rude then I apologize. I just want to know.

I'm not saying it's wrong to start so late. I guess women these days are focusing more on college and career right away and then starting families later in life. I have heard, though, that it is more difficult (and dangerous to her health) for a woman to have kids past 40. Maybe I should have put this in the mens' section, since none of the women want to answer.

probablybecause we know the answer... you are right about the health issues for the woman and increase in the child's disabilities potential. There is also the assumption the woman is looking to create her own child; however, there are many "adoptable" children. Also, the woman may consider her husband's children as her own...i know women who never had children and talk of their step children as their own.

Hi there,

I can only speak for myself, but for me the magic age was 40. Growing up I always wanted a large family, but have this really wild idea that I should be married before having kids. Terribly old fashioned I know, but there it is. Plus, God set up a system where it takes two to make 'em and two to break 'em.

Anyway, each woman has to make up her mind on her own I figure. I helped raise a niece who now has children of her own. While not adverse to other peoples' children (occupational hazzard), it just doesn't seem meant to be for me to have biological kids.

As you mentioned, the health risks have risen astronomically. Also, it isn't that long until retirement.

The exception to this would be God saying he has different plans. In that case, ah well. The best laid plans of mice and men.....
