Rabbit, I think it's a combination of the two, and that it holds true for both men and women. The actual words that are said DO matter, but the delivery definitely can make a huge difference in how those words are received and interpreted by the other person.

In electronic communication, I think this means that we have to take extra care to look at our presentation and make sure that things are clear and that we're really saying what we mean. For example, if we're saying something that could potentially come off as being harsh, but our intention isn't to come off that way, that it would show wisdom to "pad" our words with some phraseology that shows our compassion. Because we can't see body language or facial expressions, or hear the intonations in someone's voice when we're online, we have to try to convey those same things in our written words, which could mean being wordier than we normally would be, just to ensure that our meaning is properly captured.
