As a guy I am not the greatest fan of musicals especially some of the more modern ones (I think its safer not to name names with all the girls on here ), but there are those rare gems that I absolutely love!

My personal all time favorite is Man of La Mancha, which is a broadway adaption of the novel Don Quixote. I listen to original broadway soundtrack quite often haha. It explores powerful themes in a very real and moving way.

I haven't had the opportunity to see it live as of yet. I wish I had been around to see the original broadway cast back in 1965! I believe it is one of the most popular plays ever produced on broadway and it has been brought back several times over the years with new cast members . . . hopefully one day! lol

Has anyone else listened to the soundtrack or has seen it performed live?

What are some of your favorites?

Ah, my type of question!

"Man of la Mancha" has some great music in it, but I've never seen it live either. Perhaps someday I will! "The Sound of Music" is another favorite of mine.

Two of my newer favorites are "Jane Eyre: The Musical" and "Little Women: The Musical". Both have some exceptional music in them, and I've had the opportunity to actually perform as a musician in both of them. (I played the flute in the pit orchestra for Jane Eyre, and was the primary pianist for Little Women just a couple months ago.)

"Jane Eyre" deals with a lot of very deep issues, and does it from a surprisingly Christian standpoint. I was impressed by it. It also follows the book very closely, which is remarkable given how long and detailed that book is.

"Little Women" doesn't do quite as good a job of dealing with deep issues, but makes up for it by giving a fresh look to such a well-known story. I will say that the audience (and orchestra, I might add) was in tears every performance...and three of the main characters never did get through a few scenes without crying.

I also like selected songs and scenes from "Jekyll and Hyde," "Les Miserables," "Wicked", and a few more that I'm drawing a blank on this morning. Some of the songs are really powerful, though as a whole I don't care for the musicals.

I guess I'll see how I like "Big River" next spring...I'll probably be playing the piano for it.

Hmm. Good question. I'm trying to remember which ones I've seen...

I would say that my favourites are "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music."

I enjoy going to ballets, too, even though nobody talks =p Swan Lake is beautiful. I could sit there forever listening to the orchestra and watching the dancers. I always get so distracted at the movies and even with plays usually, but with a ballet, I'm just so completely taken in; the fire alarm could go off and I probably wouldn't even notice!
