Should christians be doing this to their bodies? Is it biblically correct?

Have you every had piercing, tattoos done and now wish you didn`t?

Would you date someone that has?

Diidn`t Jesus take the ultimate tattoo and piercing for us?

If you look in the Biblical questions or moral standards section you will find a long thread about this.

As far as Lev. 19:28, it is always important to put it into context. I find it interesting that Christians will use this verse to prove that we should not have tattoos, but dont enforce the previous verse:

Leviticus 19:27 (NASB)

27 ~'You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard.

We have no problems following the Roman custom of shaving our beards, but we are told that it is wrong to have a tattoo. I tend to follow the thinking that the regulation had something to do with cult practices. Of course you need to be careful of what you have tattooed on you. I have always thought it would be interesting, but could never think of what I would want permanently on my body.

I do agree with susana21, if we do it to call attention to ourselves, then that is different. That is why I am not fond of most piercing, except the typical ear piercing for the ladies.

Thie New Testament Scripture teaches "Principles", for example:

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewerly and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight" (1 Peter 3:3-4)

If you take this as : one should not wear braided hair, jewelry or fine clothes .....you have entirely missed the point, and the "principle" of this scripture.

I don't think it takes a Doctorate in Theology to understand how this applies to tattos and piercings.

Since there is no male or female in Christ this "Principle" applies to both

Should christians be doing this to their bodies? Is it biblically correct? I'd agree with most people--I don't find anything against them in scripture. Tasteful, moderate tattoos or piercings that can be hidden easily if you end up getting a job that has policies against them is probably wise, though.

Have you every had piercing, tattoos done and now wish you didn`t? Never had any piercings or tattoos of any sort and probably never will. I have a strong aversion to anything that looks mildly painful, and usually end up in jobs with stricter dress codes.

Would you date someone that has? I wouldn't be as likely to, no, but I wouldn't rule it out. I'm more attracted to traditional and/or professional men, and at least where I live not many of the men who could be described as traditional or professional have noticeable tattoos or piercings, beyond maybe one ear.

sorry, Cobbler, guess I for one Do "enforce" the previous verse and do not shave the sides of my head either!!

Taken in context these are some of the things that the heathen did~maybe to differenciate from Believers at the time (a possibility that just came to me!) Contempory groups (ie. cults) will try and look different (even tho they all look the SAME when they shave their heads and wear white robes or whatever)

From the beginning the devil's main ploy was one of subtilty. (Think frog in the boiling water senario) Christians or at least many that profess Christ still so often want to "fit in" even going as far as saying "how can I witness if I don't fit in?" sorry....twosp mada a good point: there are principals learned by looking in other places (which was my concern when I only quoted one verse...) We are to follow God's precepts~to do that means you must study..as in the whole Book

as for me and my house...I pray I can 'buck up' and take a stand to be christlike and different ("peculiar people the KJV says)...so when He gives me a new body, if will just be cuz this one is worn out, not cuz of the old graffitti on it!

I knew a lady who got a tatto of a unicorn on her upper breast when she was 18. She is now 38 with two kids and has the same tatto when she was 18, except it looks like a giraffe.

Ok, I just made that up....but it could happen!:excited:

I heard a true story about a pregnant lady whose doctor complimented her on the whale she had tattooed on her stomach. She informed him that it was NOT a whale, it was a fish.

I won't ever get a tattoo, but I do think that one or two tattoos might look good on a person. A person covered in tattoos looks a bit tacky.

I always told people that if I ever did get a tattoo (which I won't!) that I would get a dolphin across my stomach.... I am starting to rethink that design a little!

So I debated whether to reveal or not but its a rather sweet story I think so here I go

First you have to understand that by vocation I am a conservative professional. Just a few months before my late husband went into a coma we went on a road trip to Vegas to an IRS convention (no I dont work for them) When I came back to the room he was sporting a tattoo of the design he had created many years earlier for our wedding rings. It is two hearts joined by a cross. Truly the symbol of what kept us together! By the time we left he had talked me into getting a small one on the back of my shoulder.

The best part was when we came back and flashed our sons and the looks on their faces - I have a great picture of the tats that he took. That picture also brought laughter at his memorial.

Now I am glad I did it. It makes me smile through the tears when I see it I dont know how I will feel if I meet someone new but he will always be a part of who I am.
