Unwritten Rules? ie : 'The Control of a Thread'

I have been guilty of this, but then had to check myself.....

It seems when someone starts a topic thread for discussion, they seem to act as if they are hosting it at their house. Therefore they have control over it, feel responsible for its content, and all must play by their rules. If things don't go how the original poster wants, they can correct and reprove the course of the discussion or shut it down.

After "checking" myself I am of the opinion you wind it up and let it go. As soon as you hit submit (interesting word) it belongs to everyone.

Any opinions, feelings etc....?

I think everyone has done it, like me taking a thread about Christmas movies and turning into whinning about being alone for the holidays.

But some people do it as a rule....

You started fairly on topic Cobbler. Perhaps I would be more concerned if I have a very specific question I needed answered.

There's a huge difference between a conversation that changes over time and deliberately derailing a thread. And a thread can be derailed in more ways than just a shift in topic.

Every one has an opinion and some feel stronger about their's than others, make assumptions, project their feelings on to others that have nothing to do with what the source of it is, etc. It's almost impossible to be understood like that. So now I just avoid arguments or when things get personal. There's no point. I know what I think and I don't need to sell it or have it approved by a jury of my peers. I just try to respectfully say what I think and if you don't buy it, then don't buy it. It's really not my problem.

Character is more important than reputation.

In short, we cannot please everybody. I think it is normal. There are teachers that let the students wander out of topic depending on if the wandering is slightly related and kind of learning, he might be discovering some things himself in the process. There are also those that stick to the outline, or like what is said, sharing opinions in a box. I think that is manipulative. Since this is a forum, I think everyone is free to contribute his responsible thoughts. And by this we kind of know his traits, in his words he must be expressing the contents of his heart. How the subject/topic affect him, how he relate it to other areas in daily life. If he wander so far in a thread, close minded, cannot see your side of the argument, I can imagine that must be his way of life in marriage. Like GodsJude, she must be fun to be with, I mean, she made me laugh many times, I remember it is like oral reading Hackleberry Finn.
