I do not really like the term "Calvinism", but it get's the point across with out having to write down every single doctrine. I just want some good discussion. If you do not adhere to the Doctrines of Grace please don't reply :).

Isn't it interesting when you think of how many Men have seen their name added to what is called the word of GOD?

Kinda reminds me of other icons...golden arches, whatever.:ribbit:

discussion under biblical questions today if you are interested.

I believe God is sovereign, of course.

However, I believe in a mix of Calvinism and Arminian views. Sounds oxymoronic, I know, but it's hard to explain. :)

Browneyedgirl,

It is not a oxymoronic to believe such a thing. Just cause a few hundred years ago some guys quantified and divided doctrine as they interpreted it, doesn't mean you have to "play by their rules".

I attend a Reformed Bible study every other Saturday, but I don't know that I agree 100% with Calvanism. Most of it, yes, but there's that one little point about Election (and Jesus dying only for the Elect) that I'm still struggling to figure out.

I don't like the term Calvinist either, because it has the connotation of following a theologist. I prefer the term doctrines of grace, which refers to the five acronym TULIP. (Total Depravity, Unconditonal Election, Limited atonement, Irrestible grace, Perserverance of the saints).

As bcpianogirl mentioned, another term to refer to this is reformed theology, taken from the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation.

bcpiano There are many who would consider themselves 4 point Calvinists, limited atonement being the most often objected.

Yeah, for me it's parts of Unconditional Election and Limited Atonement that sort of throw me off...and I do agree with parts of those, just not their entirety.

Another thing that gets me (and I think it might just be a select few people within this Bible study group that I go to, not necessarily the whole group or reformed folks in general) is that they consider their "freedom in Christ" to be a sort of "get out of jail free" card so that they can live the way they want to and no one can tell them otherwise because to do so would be to judge them based on works, not grace. I don't believe that we have the freedom to live how we want to; we have the freedom to live as Christ commanded us because His grace is the ONLY thing that is saving us from hell, and because we love Him. And perhaps they have some freedoms that I personally do not have (such as having the occasional drink), but that is where we have to be responsible and not cause others to stumble...in my case, it would be a HUGE stumbling block to certain people in my life if I were to simply have a glass of wine with my dinner or drink a few sips of champagne at a wedding or party.

Can anyone here explain that line of thinking to me? (The "get out of jail free" mentality, that is.) I'm not looking for an argument, just an honest explanation to help me understand this.

This line of thinking is one that Christians of all theologies have fallen into, and it isnt right. Paul talked about it when he described how grace is increased through Christ, but that people were taking it as an excuse to sin.

Romans 5:20 6:1

The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

I'm pretty much with pianogal on this one, so I guess that makes me a partial Calvinista.
